Best hob filter you've every used on a nano?

I'd go for a Seachem Tidal 35. Pump is submerged and has a surface skimmer built in.

I like the standard aquaclears, I run an AC50 on my 20g. You can buy a custom acrylic insert for them from inTank which is pricey but I feel like it really improves the internal layout of it by allowing filter floss to be accessible from the top for way easier cleaning without removing carbon or other media.
They ever fix that God awful top that vibrates nonstop?

Not sure, I haven't had any issues with that. Might be the acrylic media insert I use stiffens it up and absorbs vibrations?
Could be.. great filters don't get me wrong, I just had several issues with them not restarting after power outages or other reasons they cut off.
Another one I always liked when I used hob was the emperor series.
Seachem's Tidal line. Get the Tidal 35. I used to run Aquacleas but always had to cobble together the surface skimmer out of PVC. The Tidal has it built in and I've found that it really does work.
The consensus around the web seems to be that the AC50 is a great choice.
I also considered this beast, which seems overkill. Still really cool!

Yeah I'd say just figure out what features are most important to you and decide which filter provides those. If surface skimming is important the Tidal sounds great. If you like the internal layout the way I do AC+intank insert is a great option.
I’m using a Tidal 55 on my sps dominate 20 long. It’s set up peninsula style with the Tidal on one end and a cheap Jaebo SLW-10 wave maker (AI Nero knock off) on the opposite side. Inside the Tidal, from bottom to top, I have the stock blue foam topped with filter floss, then three chunks of live rock rubble. That leaves enough space to drop in a bag on Chemipure blue nano if needed to run carbon, etc... The system is still under a year old but I’m quite happy with the Tidal so far. It provides great surface movement with broad flow control and the surface skimming works well.
