Best LEDs

I am about to order 3 of the reefledlights P47 fixtures. Through my research it looks like a solid package. I am curious to see the par level difference from my mh to these fixtures. I might order a par meter.

That's where I am leaning to but I got I great deal on one radion gen 2. I like it so now I am on the fence

Those are nice too. I wish it was more cut and dry. Seems like a guessing game. In my experience with online forums, you do not receive ALL of the details. A $100 fixture might be a perfect fixture, but someones coral died but failed to mention they also didn't do a water change in 9 months.

In my research, water quality is ~70% and lighting is ~30%. < Might be slightly off :) I have never seen a successful sps tank without decent water quality.

Good luck, if you want to check out mine your welcome to come by. Should be first of June. Might borrow a par meter by then so I can compare and dial in the LED's according to intensity.

Have you considered DIY or an led/t5 combo. If I were doing a build right now I would do DIY led and retrofit t5s. Tell us more about your setup, will help us give the best responses

Heck people grow coral under screw in led bulbs there are tons of options out there. For me the best proven bang for the buck.

I got a par meter when ever you are ready. Reggie you know I like to try different things. I got the Radion to see qhat it will do. Not wanting the t5 bc heat and bulb cost over time.

Thanks Mike, I didn't know you had one. I'll let you know when I get the LED's in. I won't change over until I find some numbers out.

Good luck on your decision.

Got my new reefbreeders a couple of weeks ago. Can't speak for growth just yet, but it makes my tank look much better than my esh1nes... Just sayin...

I have 3 maxspect mazarra p's on my 92 corner and love em. Great growth, color, and ability to tweek so far. I would get them again even over the radeons. For you though it might take quite a number of units. The DIY crowd around here is great and may be the way to go if you like to tinker. I would consider doing DIY myself if I had to do over. I just dont like that so many manufactured units ignore other colors besides blue and white.

kessil won out of the 32 lights involved[/QUOTE]

That is from a poll of online voters. They could easily manipulate that. There is so much money in LEDs for the manufacturers I just can't believe its legit.

does par give a clear picture of PAR of LED? I've heard no... especially with BLUE LED.. just something to consider...

I may be way off.

The argument is not whether LED's work or not. More attention should be given to best bang for the buck or most reliable with best results. More information should be shared when someone gives their opinions or feedback.

DIY is nice if someone is willing/able to do it.
Pre-fab kit is the other option. Finding a product, that a company is willing to stand behind is paramount.

This hobby is about experimentation. Who would of thought 50 years ago to have a stingray in their living room swimming around, rather than stuffed on the wall.

Joseph, for the record,i lump yours into the category of mine, very high quality.

Brandon, its really not a debate of mh/t5 vs led[im sure thats where your comment was going]because these guys[Mike and Joseph] know for a fact that high quality leds will grow and color the crap out of acros.

I just bought a couple p55 packages from reefledlights and it's supposed to be shipping out yesterday or today. Build ended up being fairly pricey since I added LED's to fill out the heat transfer plate. 66 LED's per plate and I got 2 of the 8" x 18". It's the DIY pre drilled and tapped solderless build so should hopefully be decent. I ended up with 12 drivers total since I had to get a couple extra to handle the UV's and some moon lights. So the ability to tweak just the right colors and intensity should be well within my grasp with my apex and and extra VDM module.
Ended up being about $1500 with all the required accessories, the only thing I didn't get was the carbon fiber cases which I can add later if I want. It's pretty close to the price of 2 of those new radion pro's but I still feel like it's going to have better coverage and more power since the lights are spread out over an 8 x 18 area instead of the circle style radion uses.

I was using 2 x 250w 20k halides (hqi ballasts too) and 2 x 95w power compacts and my sps was all turning brown and not doing well. Finally got a hold of a light meter and was shocked that I was getting like 280 par a couple inches below the water surface directly under the light. Bulbs were only 2 months old but fixture is a coralife light kit that's about 6 years old. Cleaned the reflectors and glass couple times best I could. The heat bakes my room too.
So I took the plunge and went for it.

Will let you know how it goes, but will probably be a couple months before noticable results I'm guessing.

If you know what you're doing and know how to properly build them I'd say a DIY led setup would be the best since you can not only plan your color spectrums but you get to choose the led's and optics that best suit your tank. You can go anywhere between 3w to 10w led's DIY and having the abilitiy to choose the ratio's of your led colors is awesome (if you know what you're doing).
