Hi guys and gals. Somewhat new to this forum but was hoping you could give me some ideas on the best place to buy some T5HO lamps. I am in the middle of a DIY 6 lamp 54W T5HO build and want to start getting my lamps in order. Since I am very new to reef keeping, any help on what mix of lamp would be great. I would love to buy the best with no regard to cost but I am on a budget at the moment so if there are cheaper alternatives that don't sacrifice tooooooo much in quality that would be great.

All help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks jhutto. I have to be in that area tomorrow and was planning on stopping in to see what they have. Any thoughts on what is economically priced yet still does a good job?

Make sure you get GOOD a$$ reflectors or else the whole fixture would be pointless with cheap ones.

I am interested in your DIY T5 HO fixture. Any build thread of it?

They carry the really good ones Gieseman (German) and also the more economical ones. George or one of the guys will help with selection and colors.

Stopped in and looked at the lamps at Pure Reef. The Gieseman are about $10.00 a lamp more than on-line. Of course, you don't have to pay shipping but if I bought them all at once it would only be on shipping charge.

The reflectors I am using are from the fixture I am modifying. It is a High Bay light fixture designed to be used in Warehouses but each lamp has an individual cavity in the refelctor assembly. It is a bit beat up but it will have to do until I can scrap another one down the road.

Not much to look at yet but I did get the fixture cut down from 24" wide to about 18' wide. Now I have to build the wooden shroud for it so it will look decent. I know it won't be optimum but since I can't afford what I want right now it will have to do. LOL

As I mentioned, funds are pretty tight right now so I may have to start with some elcheapo lamps from Petco. I can get three lamps for what one decent ATI cost on-line. Yes I know, you get what you pay for but it will still be better than the two lamp fixture I have now. Then when cash picks up a bit I can invest in top of the line lamps.

Check out petco.com. They have the new blue lamps plus the 420 nm violet lamps. $24 each for 54 watt HO
I've seen them in person. They really bring out the colors in coral.I know of a couple reefers here at ARC that has them.

Hey CarlitosReef....if you are still interested, you can see my DIY fix at "Rich's DIY T5HO 6 Lamp Fixture" in the DIY section.

So when are you going to get my Diamond Goby in Jenn. That is my last fish and my sand bed should be ready for him. Then I can get some coral going. :-)
