Just ordered a led kit from rapid led. Any advice or experience to share? I'll be going from old pc bulbs to a decent led array, should I start off with shorter photo periods?

Thanks!

Dimmable? I kept the same photo periods but just slowly ramped up the intensity.

I have a kit for my bc29 and had the lights overheat and melt the plastic tabs that hold the heatsink because the wall wart for the fans some how was not fully seated in the plug so they were off. I lost one of my leds from overheating because of it.

The lights look great and if I had to do it again I would in a heart beat. If you have any questions hit me up.

I think dimming them at the start will lead to the best transition rather than a shorter photo period. IMHO.

Kit is for the 14, paid 137 shipped. Non dimmable though :( I don't have a controller.

that's the kit I got. I would have loved the dimmable set, but I couldn't afford the extra $40 for the luxury. I figured all on/off is what I'd use most often anyhow in a tank this small.

Anything new that this'd open the door for me in terms of reef keeping? I was just looking forward to better growth and look, but better lighting could mean SPS in the future? I'd love to pack this thing with color. I wouldn't miss having fun and colorful fish then. haha

I was researching ideas and cam across this one:

The only take away I got from that, is that it looks like it'd be better with the top fan instead of the side fan that they include, does the rapidled kit leave enough gap up top to be able to slide a fan in there? (I'm a pc geek, so I have plenty of 12v fans floating around in various sizes. lol)

also, if I wanted to set it up so I can turn on blue/white separate, any ideas on how to go about doing that? I hear you only need one driver to accomplish (without dimming) but I'm not 100% on how to set it up.

You should have 2 drivers one for blue leds and one white. If you want just blue just turn that set of leds on.

That looks like a great idea about cutting a hole and putting a fan. I did not have that much space in my 29 gal. I ended up cutting a hole similar to the hqi hood. I need as much covered as possible because of my cats. I will be posting pics of it soon so it makes more sense.

I have cats as well, so I need to keep it covered as well, but I figured a grill and big fan blowing out would keep the hair clutter down. From the directions it doesn't look like much clearance, but I'll see what it looks like when it gets here I guess.

And sweet on the sps idea. It'll be a little bit, but nice to know I'm going in the right direction. I love how I leave the hobby for a year and some change and LED's go from dream to doable, fairly easy and cheap.
