I recently bought the "Rapids Pro Filter Model RP3 by TOM Aquarium Products"(
prod_details.php
 
Both the Bio-balls and the Sintered Glass Bio-Cylinders are for bacteria to grow on for de-nitrification. You will find many different options about the effectiveness of both products and the entire idea of having them in your filter. I've have tried both ways with mixed results.
 
I'm not a big fan of the bio balls, I like using LR instead. Seemed to help out on Nitrates on down the road, at least for me
 
Matrix is much better!

Bio-Balls have been around for 30 years or so, with mixed reviews.

Matrix offers much, much more surface area to grow bacteria, and far less likely to create a nitrite spike.

You say that you prefer using live rock...do you mean putting live rock in the filter itself in place of the bio-media?
