Anyone use bio pellets in a reactor? ANy brand better than the other? I was looking into the brightwell katalyst bio pellets? Looking for anyones persoanl experience here.

I am. Been using them for about 3 months now. I use npx bio pellets in a TLF 150 reactor. with a MJ 1200. Works great so far. I noticed that when it was low on pellets my tank would start to grow green algae. but after i reloaded some more pellets in the reactor the glass and tank water is crystal clear. check RC if you want more opinions. I don't think there are a lot of bio pellet users on ARC.

I have two LF 150 reactor with bio pellet & Phosban running off MJ1200...
I noticed I have to replace before 6 month of usage... works great for me >.<

Are the bio pellets suppose to tumble??? Mine didnt come with a maxi jet so i might have to get a bigger pump??

they need to tumble and don't let it clump up. I would get a stronger pump so you don't have to worry about it not being strong enough.

yea im working on it. So these pellets actually erode as they get older?? Then you just replace them? Have u noticed any effect on PH?

To make it not crumb up... it's good to get it wet (RO?DI water) before it goes in the reactor...
using your hand to make them separate if you have to...

Bio pellet stays the same size and you just have to replace it in four-to six???.. month...

When I took it off line... it stick really bad... guess it was full of bacteria...
My PH was same before and after adding... Hope this helps~

yea im just getting opinions thank you. Did u see a drop in phosphate and nitrates?

Yha... I just remember I added bio-pellet because I was having problem with Nitrate... When I started tank (about six Month ago)... I used Bio pellet and it dropped my nitrate to undetectable from like (30...)

And when I start having red slim algae... That's when I replaced it....
Red slim was gone in few days of changing it... and I got bigger skimmer too...

yea one thing to remember is to add it in slowly. putting to much is going to cause your tank to be cloudy and have red slime break out in your tank.

@Project. The biopellets are actually supposed to erode away after a long period of time. I believe I've read that once the level is down a third you either add more or replace. Also, do you have the output/effluent from your biopellet reactor directed into the same compartment as your skimmer intake? The red slime you saw was likely a byproduct of the effluent not being skimmed out.

I filled up less than half of the reactor with the bio pellets and i did put the outlet into the skimmer section. Just need to get a maxi jet 1200 and ill be gtg

When I took the pallet off line... the pallets were covered in thick clear coats and smelled really stink... I start having red slim in the tank within 4 month of pellet being online... took it off and replaced it with new load of pellet... the slim went away in few days...

Thinking about it now...

I did a little test... when people were talking about running skimmer part.... that is what cause the red slim...

as for skimmer... I always had the output of reactor back into skimmer chamber... And I noticed right away that my skimmer was working much better... Pulling much gunk out...

Soo do u guys feel that filling the reactor less than half full would be too much on a 120 to start off with?

Take the time and read this. Far more input than the few that are using it here....

Well after reading all that it seems that the biopellets are very beneficial and seems to work as far as reducing No3 AND Po4, reducing nusiance algae and coloring up corals. However, i do not have bad algae problems other than a dusting on my glass, as i wanted to do this for preventitive maintenance. All the talk of cyano outbreaks have me second guessing doing this. Just thinking of the old saying, if it aint broke done fix it.

? They smell and are coated with slime because they are feeding the beneficial bacteria that you want. The slime or mulm as some over on RC call it is a byproduct that you want skimmed out of the tank. This is why you are to direct your effluent towards the skimmer intake.

So crew why do u think that some and not all users of bio pellets get a cyano outbreak?

I couldnt tell you any chemical or biological reason why some see cyano at the start of biopellets. Its generally accepted that the best way to avoid the cyano outbreak is to incrementally increase the volume of biopellets in your reactor up to the level necessary for your tank. Perhaps those that had outbreaks simply put in the total amount of biopellets at one time. Personally, I did 250mls a week of ecobak pellets until I'd added 1250mls. I would soak them as suggested in RO water for 24 hours then add them. I never had an outbreak of any cyano.

My trates have always been at 1 or less, so I cant tell you if they've REALLY done anything, but I've really upped my feeding since putting them online and still havent seen an increase in trates.

Read through the ecobak thread above and you should get all the info you need.

Ok well a quick calculation. I've got a 120 dt an 40g sump with 150-200 lb lr. So I'm gonna say I have about 130 gallons total. 1gram of Bio pellets equals 1.6 ml. It says to use 1g per 2 gallons of water. Would u take that and half it or divide by 4 to start off with? If I divide by four it would be 52 ml which is less than 1/4 cup
