On my 20gal tank I have a hang on marineland biowheel filter. I have been told that the bio wheel becomes a nuisance after a few months and becomes a nitrite or nitrate factory and should be removed once this begins to occur. Should I take the bio wheel out and if so, when? Tank has been up almost 2 months now. It has the hang on filter and probably 30-35lbs of live rock. No skimmer, sump, etc. (probably needed but not in the budget)

If your tank is cycled (so that the live rock is now your biological filter), and it sounds like it is, then you don't need the biowheel at all. You can remove it any time.

+1 No need for it. HOB are good way to filter IMO, if you keep up with the maintenance. I stop using them for aesthetic reasons.
