BioCube filtration and setups

Just bought a 29 BioCube to run as a grow out tank. I hate seeing frag racks in my beautiful display.

Looking for recommendation and problematic expirences others have had and what they did to solve them.

Number one, filtration, I know everyone is taking out the bio balls and replacing with rock rubble. Anything else?

I see a number of possible problems, first and most importantly cooling. Since the canopy is enclosed I've got to imagine heat is a problem? Plus the BioCube I got has the upgraded lighting, 3 PC instead of 2.

Skimmers, is it even worth the effort or just compensate by good husbandry i.e. regular weekly water changes?

Do any of you run ATO? I'm hoping with the enclosure water evaporation is not significant enough to require an ATO.

Cooling (unless you're running LEDs)
Calcium drops (reactor?)
Skimmer is necessary if you've got any fish/animals you feed in there (unless you go bare bottom and vacuum the substrate very often - racks make this tough)


(I think that Chris @ Fishscales was selling a biocube with a bulkhead drilled in the back glass a couple months ago.. maybe someone else just figured they'd add a sump to the thing and that's why the bulkhead was installed)

im using an AquaC remora, getting it today, on mine. I currently have lr in the 2nd chamber and nothing else really but plan on running carbon and purigen in there.

FWIW.. I've got Seachem Denitrate in a HOB filter on a FOWLR tank and it's doing a pretty good job..
