So I just made the move to LED (well kit ordered last night so not done yet) and now I'm looking at a different direction for filter media. Right now I have a three tier overflow filter thing that holds media. I was running carbon and purigin for a while, but once those were exhausted I just switched to simple sediment filters to pick up scrapped off algae, cat hair, and misc.

Should I run carbon or anything like that? Should I look toward adding the biocube skimmer in the future in place of the filter rack I have now.

fwiw, this is some sort of "upgrade" filter setup that the original owner put in it, so I'm not partial toward it, it's just what I have :) I can take pics if it helps, but it seems self explanatory to me.

Edit: And if I go skimmer, would loosing the sediment filter have a negative impact? They do pick up a lot of gunk.

The biocube brand skimmer is terrible in my opinion i wouldnt spend the money to even try. There are ones that do much better you can find online. Skimmers are always nice to have but not necessary. I dont run carbon in an of my tanks all biological and a filter media of some sort depending on the tank.

so just the sediment and maybe a couple small pieces of LR?

Those things can be modded like crazy I think probably youtube has vids. But skimmer isn't out just not there brand IMO. I think they make fuge kits for them too.

I run purigen and chemi-pure elite under filter floss in my media rack. It's a good setup. Can't say for certain that there isn't a better way to do it but if you have it you might as well run something :).

For a skimmer check out the Tunze 9002 or Aquatic Life 115. I run the 115 and while it's fun(read difficult) to dial in it does skim very well when tuned.

I wouldn't place LR in the back unless you're trying to grow pods or something. It'll just trap detritus.
