Just bought a beautiful green and purple birdsnest and once I put it in my tank the base of trunk started turning white.
Is it dying?are the parts that turn white dead for good or can they come back under better conditions?
Heres a picture.

Looks like rtn. Did it go through a rapid temp or possibly AK change, what are your water params and how slowly did you acclimate it?

I would say cut some frags right away. Looks like rtn. If so it will go pretty quick. Might save some frags just cut well above the dying base.

Ok whats rtn? I acclimated it for about 20minutes.. I have my ph slightly higher because I was having
Algae problems..I think its at 8.5 . Had lfs check a few days ago and they said it was good. I ordered another test kit today. Old one I had was out.

yes, it's dying....

sps need almost perfect, stable conditions forever!

I agree with Mysterybox, it's dying. I would start cutting that puppy up before you loose it all.

Rtn=Rapid Tissue Necrosis. Pretty much just means its dying fast. It will be gone within 24 hours so cut some frags.

He can cut it all day long to try to save it, but if his parameters (all, not just PH) are not in check, the frags will die as well. Fighting a loosing battle if Ak, Ca, and Mg are not at appropriate levels and stable.
How long has your tank bedn set up? SPS corals need a mature and stable environment to survive and thrive.

albeit I agree in cutting, however, I think in this case it might be pointless as I am assuming tank, water quality, lighting, flow, parems, nutrient export, mag, alk, calcium, trates, etc is not sps ready......frags will die just as quick.......

looking good! congrats!

I hope you have:
Alk:
Mag:
Calcium:
Phate:
Trate:

all stable!

Ok.wasn't sure..its weird how it looks so much different. So are you saying that the way it looked before was unhealthy
and now its healthy.

Yes, It looks healthy now. Whatever you are doing is working. Have you investd in some good test kits for CA, AK, Mg, PO4 and Nitrates? Testing periodically along with frequent water changes will help ensure it (and other corals) remain that way:up:

Cool..I honestly think that I didn't acclimate it correctly. The guy I bought it from said to just throw it in no acclimate
Needed.I didn't believe that so I acclimated it for 30 minutes.I useally acclimate everything for a hour. I think that would have made a different.

lol. that made me laugh.
