Are Blotched Anthias free swimmers ie swim around in the water column or do they mostly hide in the rockwork similar to basslets and come out on occasion?
They hang in the rockwork until they feel comfortable in their surroundings, then you will see them more often. They are more shy than many reef fish, but nowhere near as secretive as a basslet, like a Swissguard. I have a blotchy in my 100 gallon mixed reef.
Sounds like the I should group the blotched anthias with the dwarf moray, mandarin, starry blenny, and royal gramma (those that stay close to the rockwork) more so then the free swimmers, ie the redstripe hogfish, bellus angel and exquisite wrasse. Does that sound right?
These do bully other fish, but not too horribly. It'll all depend on what other anthias you're wanting to add. If you're going to add some of the more shy anthias, I'd add those before the blotched.
+1 my blotched is the boss in my tank but everyone knows it so I don't have any issues...he does not go after anyone, but they do not get in his way eaither
I was planning on adding the blotched anthias and a trio of lyretail anthias at the same time because new additions typically get bullied in my tank. Do you think even with the other fish in the tank already the blotched anthias may target the lyretails?
