BRS single chamber gfo reactor help

Do the sponges go bad? Seems like when I plug it in the gfo would get in my system. Dust particles penetrate pass the sponge is that normal? It was bought used gfo is new. Thanks for any help wanna get this going but don't wanna jack anything up.

when you add the new media do you rinse it, by hooking the reactor to a sink or anything?

This would be my first use I've done nothing the member who sold it had loaded it with new Gfo prior to sale. I'm ready to install and just want to do it right so getting advice first.

Always rinse your GFO throughly with RO/DI water first, and then you can always let a gallon of tank water pass through to a bucket and discard.

which reactor cartridge do you have? are you using regular gfo?

switching to HC, using less and changing it more often has reduced my expense on gfo, btw.

Or put it in a mesh bag and pour RO water over it liberally.

When you say rinse what's best method to do this? In reactor? I definitely can run 5 gal or more From tank to buckets and just do it as a water change. The Gfo is dirt brown and very powdery. Don't believe it's any special type.

The brown at bottom of hard plastic clear outside has fallen through Gfo.

I would buy the new inner cartridges from brs for GFO & Carbon, no sponges used for GFO.

However, yes, you would rinse just the GFO in Cartridge (just hose, pour, whatever a gallon or two some RO/DI water though inner cartridge before installing top) and or run a gallon or two and discard of tank water....

Please remember I mention to you that you have to introduce just a little GFO to your tank, until your tank goes to that first phase with little GFO is the time to add little more, do not use all of the GFO that I gave to you once, that much could shock your system, I filled that much just because I tough giving as much as I could to the person who was going to buyed, but it's not for only used once.
I have bought BRS GFO from another member here and I had some bought from Ebay, they're the same granular size, which comes to dust very easy but a wash before use should remove smaller particles and dust, BRS had some bigger grain before wich was able to regenerate if intented but the price for it was almost double, and the regeneration process of the media wasn't guarantee to work.

BRS has a calculator as well for the amount of GFO for your system. I would cut that number in half for first time. You just punch in system gallons choose the media you are using and it will tell you their recommended amount.

Yeah I knew how to calculate it through there website. Just wasn't sure on the sponges and dust mostly. Ill try rinsing today and order a new sleeve ASAP. How bad is it if some gets into your system?

I use less than Brs recommends and change more often, I put it in the reactor and turn it on and pull the hose out of my sump and let it run in a bucket until it comes out clear and then I put back in sump and its good to go

I believe he just poured it in there to carry it home.gave him enough for a few changes. From what i gathered.
