I am starting to plan my 29g build and have some of the supplies already, but need some guidance on the overflow/sump/return setup.

Here's the plan so far.

29 gallon tank
700 gph overflow
15 or 20 gallon sump/fuge
Tunze Silence 1073.020 Pump (634 gph)
3/4" Loc-Line return

I will also have a Koralia 1 in the tank to assist with circulation.

Do you think that setup will work with minimum noise and decent flow?

To much flow for the return IMO unless you split it for a skimmer too. Try and get a newer Koralia. They have a smaller body and put out a lot more flow than a K1. Slow flow through the fuge and a lot more in the tank I believe.

I'm not planning on getting a skimmer right now. I was figuring with the head loss on the pump, it should be pushing somewhere around 500 gph. What would be a better gph to shoot for? I might pony up for one of the really nice power heads later down the line, but for now, I'm going to hold on to it.

I did a lot more reading over the last couple of days and I agree that a 300 gph overflow might be a better better choice with a 1/2" return instead of a 700 gph overflow with 3/4" return.

As far as pumps go, I like the Eheim 1250 and know they are reliable and quiet, but just a bit more expensive than most pumps on the market, but worth it.

I have also been looking at the Sicce Syncra 1.5 (357 GPH) and the 2.0 (528 GPH) pumps.

The 1.5 would put at about 200 gph @ 4' head height and the 2.0 325 gph at the same head height. It's a little hard to see on the graph that they use.

From the videos I have seen on youtube, they are very comparative to the Eheims as far as noise is concerned are are slightly cheaper.

The Syncra's have a flow regulator, which would be a plus in the case of the 2.0, but I'm not sure how much the flow is regulated. I cant find anything on it.

Does anyone have one or know how much the flow can be turned down?

That sounds much better. I have been told and believe a 10% return is optimum. I would shoot for 300-ish. I'm not sure that the 1/2 or 3/4 return is really relevant but I would think the 3/4 would suffice and can easily be changed later if you so desire.
