I'm thinking of placing an online order for some fish at live aquaria or Petco (not the store; the distribution facility) and was curious how both the 14 day guarantees worked.

Three of the fish in the order I have concerns that they will live that long (Copperband butterfly, powder blue tang, and white cheek tang). Should they die how does the live guarantees work?

Thanks

Sorry but I don't believe in buying any fish online, any one of those can be found at your lfs or even another local reefer.
You can even have your local store order it for you so you don't have to deal with any issues that may come up.

Did your Lfs order the fish online or did they drive to the local ocean and catch them? Do they offer a 14 day gurantee? If you quarantine does it matter where they come from?

I think what they are saying is they are a pretty common reef fish. Personally I have no opinion of buying on line if that's what you want to do however, with that said you can go to a local store and look at the fish before you buy it and have less stress on the animal which can cause its own set of problems. Just my 2 cents worth

No one has answered your question... So I will.

I bought from Petco one time... Three Firefish and a juvenile Emperor Anglefish. On day 12 the anglefish started acting different... Hiding and not eating. On day 13 he was laying on the bottom but still breathing. I called Petco and they wouldn't do anything because the fish was still alive.

That afternoon the fish died, I called Petco... They wanted me to send a picture which I did while on the phone. She opened the email, saw the picture and gave me the choice of a new fish or refund. I chose the refund since I was going on vacation for a week the next day (and they wanted to ship that day). I had a full refund within 24 hours.

Hassle free!

Thanks. That is the kind of info I am looking for.

To the other responses: yes I know I can get these locally but not one of them will replace or refund a dead fish 14 days later... So if the online sites really stand behind the guarantee it would be in my best interest to buy online with at least a 14 day security of survival.

I have spent $100's on fish that have died from my lfs. Most of those were seemingly random deaths (cyanide or perhaps internal parasites) and my lfs said I'm SOL...

I should also add that several fish over at petco online are much much cheaper than my lfs even after adding in shipping (on a multitude fish order). Nobody near me sells powder blues for $35!

I really don't understand why local fish stores don't offer a reasonable warranty. Or even an upsell warranty like "hey, for 5 bucks more we'll give you a 14 day guarantee" similar to what happens anything you buy anything at the cash register these days.

I tried for 6 months to get a LFS to get me a Blacker Ice because one of mine died. I finally gave up and ordered online and they were awesome! Now UPS is a whole different story. You must be home watching for the truck or they may just toss it on the back porch (that you never use) and blow off the signature required. It was also 19 degrees outside. The water bag the fish was in was 68 degrees when I started acclimation!
Long story short I still have the beauty, it made it but "IF" I could buy from a LFS = Rit I would...

If you have a relationship with them and they know you know what your doing...they work with you.

Think about the overhead and the fact that you get to see the fish before you buy it. You get to see it eat and tons of other stuff.. don't get me wrong I order off line I'm just saying the 3 fish you listed aren't most likely to be healthy. We risk there health just to save a few bucks when you can get a store to order it and I'm sure if you have a good relationship with them they will do uou right

Could someone with experience clarify the 14 day guarantee a bit more. One of my buddies was saying they will replace a lost fish if it dies but they charge you shipping costs again.....??.

Petco was not going to charge for overnight shipping.

Their terms are super easy to understand...?

I've only suffered a fish loss from them... a turquoise rainbow... 8 years ago. They immediately refunded the price of the fish, no questions asked or proof required. Top notch customer service.

Debate away buying locally vs online. (I buy 75% local), but there's no concern over their guarantee
