Calcium Reactor

Nice! Hehehe!:) I moved this thread from Product Review to Reef Discussion.

I would recommend either MRC or GEO. They are both fine units. MRC is an ARC Sponsor.

It would help if you posted what size tank and size sump you have, meaning what is your net system volume, and what type corals are you looking to keep, as different species have different calcium demands, SPS needing the most.

I have a 120 acrylic tank with 30 acrylic sump as well. I'm looking to pretty much have all different types of coral in my display. Both SPS and softies. I've heard that GEO is a really good brand but I haven't had luck finding a used one for a decent price. Any idea where I can find one?

Just be patient and wait, they sometimes come up on here or on craigslists or you could even check ebay and alot of times it will be a package deal at a great buy . It just all depends... Also, i think i see more mrc reactors for sale than geo's just an fyi...

Yeah I just picked up an MRC-CR2 with everything except the pH controller (I'd be using my Apex anyways) for $375 shipped. Look for them on RC, here and craigslist.

Imma do some research on the MRC reactor. In the mean while, if you guys see one on another post please send it my way if you don't mind. I try to come on here to look around as much as possible but work has me swamped

For your tank and volume, I'd recommend a Geo 612 or 618 in that brand lineup. Main difference between them is the volume o media they hold. I think they'd do fine for your system requirements. You would just fill up the 612 a bit more often with replacement media.

I'll let someone with more MRC reactor experience recommend the appropriate MRC Model. I use GEOs exclusively on my system, but you would not go wrong with either brand, IMO.

I did a price comarison between the MRC and GEO units, and their pricing is about the same. The MRCs start lower, but I think there are options on MRC that are standard on GEO, like a ph probe holder is optional on the MRC vs standard on the GEO. GEOs use Eheim recirc pumps in their reactors, vs Mags or Pan World in the MRC. Once you have them comparably equipped, I think the pricing is pretty close.

Thanks for all the info Acroholic! I'm really interested in the GEO reactor myself. I guess i'll just wait it out to see if I can find one out for a good price out there. Having one new or used shouldn't affect the performance of the reactor so long as the chamber is not leaking or broken right?

Used vs new shouldn't make any difference at all.
