Hi:

Currently, we are treating two clownfish in a QT using copper with a concentration of 0.15-0.20 mg/L. They have been in the QT for three weeks and they seem fine. All white spots are gone except a little one. We have noticed the only remaining white spot is not growing/changing/dropping. I am still treating with copper. If a white spot do not go away, my fish still have ick? Can ick remain attached (trophont stage) to the fish for more than a week? When should I finish my treatment if I do not notice any change?

Thanks,

Rene

A lot of time ick will go away-if the fish is eating fine and all-he should be ok-have heard putting a cleaner shrimp will help-I'm sure others have some more extensive opinions

Depending on what type of copper you are using, yes they can. Depending on how the copper levels very throughout the day. Daily, or better yet twice daily, testing is required to maintain an appropriate and consistent level of copper. Copper specifically targets the infectious, free-swimming theront stage of this disease, as being buried deep in the skin of the host protects the trophonts; the cyst walls of the tomonts are similarly impervious. Knowing this and the life cycle of Cryptocaryon irritans, monitoring and dosing as needed in the evening right before the lights go out is going to be the most effective method. This should ensure optimal treatment concentrations at the most beneficial time.

Copper is also a known immunosuppressive, making fish more susceptible to secondary infections. The spot could be some sort of secondary infection or problem, but I doubt it.
