I have a 36 gallon tank with an Emperor 400, Protein Skimmer, Power head, and a fluval 205 canister filter. I still have the bio-wheels in the emperor, the filters, and also poly filters. I replace the filters and polyfilters monthly. In my canister filter all i have is the filters, which i clean out and replace the filter monthly also. My tank is doing great *knock on wood* but the nitrates stay around 20 which i know is okay, but id like to drop it a little. Anyways, should i add any carbon or anything else to the canister? Thanks.

Run Carbon in the canister, throw some Purigen in the Emperor.

Personally, I'd rip the bio-wheels off of the Emperor, but that might be just me.

I'd remove the biowheels too - live rock does the same job, better.

And I would only put mechanical and chemical filtration in the canister, and get rid of any/all biological in the canister.

Clean the canister at least every other week and change out the media so even the mechanical/chemical media doesn't go biological.

Those things combined with regular water changes, can and should get your nitrates down to nothing in short order.
