What is the cause and how to get rid. Have been reading and some are saying off with the lights others are saying leave lights on longer, Little help please. Bubba

get some chemi clean, follow the directions exactly. Also your skimmer will go nuts for a couple of days even after you do the required water change.

How old is your system? every time I've cycled a tank I've gotton some about 2 or 3 months after the cycle.

They say its a type of bacteria. Some get it with great water params so no one really has a solid answer as to where it comes from.

Edit: Also I got a good reduction in it when I added a gfo reactor. The chemi clean will get rid of it though it really works and its safe. Some use it a few times a year just as a maintanance thing.

Slow down... let's back up and start at the beginning before rushing to a last resort solution.

Please post your tank specs, parameters and what type of lighting you have and how old the lamps are.

Cyano needs food and light - something is feeding it. Let's figure that part out first and correct any issues before doing something that can be a disaster if your parameters aren't good to begin with.

Hey jenn, have you had a bad experiance with chemi clean? The reason I ask is whenever I've had it my params were completely acceptable. I've also never had any sort of problem using it. Granted I've only used it about 4 times. Very curious because your experiance exceeds most of us here.

She is right though we should have been more thurough with our questionare which isn't there.

I would like to hear some disaster storys from using this stuff.

Thanks Jenn

Edit: I take that back I used it twice in my brothers tank which was like a nuclear experiment gone wrong it was so dirty at one point. Needless to say there were no corals in that tank.

When used *properly* it works fine. Don't ignore the bit about doing a 20% water change in 48 hours or it can go horribly wrong. I've seen that happen. "Oh... I was supposed to do a water change?"

Often lack of, or insufficient water changes is part of what got a person into Cyano trouble to begin with.

For me a chemical fix is a last resort, AFTER all attempts at fixing the cause(s) are addressed.

I have used, and recommend, Ultralife Red Slime Remover. I have found it to be effective, and much safer. We've even used it in a our 65 with the large Squamosa clam. In 2 days Cyano is gone and stays gone, provided parameters are in check.

If any given tank is loaded with nitrate/phosphate, it's going to come back regardless, because the food is there for it. Hence, address the big picture first before throwing a chemical fix at it, because while it may fix the symptoms temporarily, if the causes aren't addressed you'll be back at square one in short order.

I have it 2 times in 5 yrs. In my case. It was my bulbs were ready to be changed. When i changed bulbs. With only wc, it went away. If you find out why its growing, and fix,no need for chem.

While I know lots of people have had great success with Chemi Clean, I did not. Followed all directions and read up on it for a couple days. I believe it lead to my only crash.

I have to agree with Jenn. Try to find the cause before going to a chemical.

I've been dealing with cayno for over 3 years now in my 65. I treat it with ChemiClean and it comes back 3 to 4 months later. I have swapped out brands of food, rinsing my food, changed up my light times, different brands of bulbs, heck even a new T5 system when my old one died. Also added a UV light to my system (not sure that would do anything for this though). I have tried swapping out sooo many things in order to find my cause and I never have.

About the only thing I haven't done is a full swap out of my rock which isn't happening. I do plan on moving my skimmer from my 95 to my 65 gallon if it will fit. It will be tight if it does though but that may help as it will improve my skimming capacity.

IT says on the package to use once a month to keep water clear. I don't do that but it says you can. I was talking to mysterybox and he uses it 4 times a year I think just as a precaution.

Not trying to argue AT ALL, I'm just saying what the package says and what some other people do with it. I use it as a last resort myself but with my great success with it I don't mind recomending it to someone else as long as they use it correctly.

Thanks for your input Jenn.

Is there anyone here that actually uses it once a month?

1st... make sure your parameters are great.

2nd... give it time...

3rd... as a last resort you can do chemiclean... but be aware it can nuke your tank if not done properly.

Not enough flow is what I have found to be the cause for it. It usually is an indicator of dead spots in the aquarium.

I use chemi-clean about 4 times a year....I follow the instructions almost 100%. I don't include an aerator since I have votech's that max O2....

I was always weary since I dose Vodka to increase bacteria, but...it works like a charm...

It doesn't matter what type of filtration you have...I run an ULNS......it's bacteria!
