Chiller

I have a 200 gallon tank. Right now I only have rock and sand but my temp keeps hitting 79.9 so I guess I need a chiller. Any input of a good brand and size?

Are you running your lights now? If so, I wouldn't sweat that temp. If your house stays this cool in the summer also you should be fine... but if you are not running lights yet, you are probably right... though with no lights running I'm surprised it is getting that warm. My 90 with 2x250w halides (as well as six pumps) is staying around 80-80.2, with the chiller unhooked and the lights running for 9 hours. The canopy fans are turning on very rarely right now.

I think the chiller manufacturers have information to help you choose a size on their websites. I'd guess 1/3 to 1/2hp would be about right.

I have 3, 250 watts metal halide and 4, 96 watt t5. The temp runs 79.9 without the metal halides I have not used them yet since I only have rock and sand right now. I am guessing when I turn on the halids I will need a chiller

What type thermometer are you using? I am with Barry on this one that seems extremely high temp with no lights running. Do you have a heater running? If so I would check it as well. Where is the tank located with in the house?

there are a few things to look at.

First off make sure you heaters are working correctly(as in they turn off)
Is your main pump submersible? This can add ALOT of heat to the system
Is your sump in your stand and is it sealed off? This will trap alot of heat as well.
Is your canopy sealed? Venting the canopy will help.
Do you have any fans on the system? Small clip on fans on the sump, as well as small fans under each halide(blowing across the water just under the bulb) will increase evaporation and cool the tank ALOT.

Basic rule of thumb before getting a chiller, invest in a few fans and an auto top off system. get your evaporation rate up and see how things go from there.
