I bought this shallow frag tank a few weeks ago and I didn’t notice this chip. The guy had plastic bumpers on each corner because he had “kids”. I should have done more due diligence, but I was just excited to get back in the hobby again..

He claimed there were no leaks and when I filled it up for a vinegar bath, I saw nothing, but I’m more concerned about collapse it the future. It doesn’t appear to have went far enough to compromise the silicone, and the interior silicone is fine.

I plan to put some more silicone over it, but does this look unusable?

its hard to tell from the picture, but does the chip have any cracks going down through the glass? Also, what's the dimensions of this tank? It might be purely cosmetic if it isn't that tall of a tank and no crack through the glass.

No cracks going down, just looks like a clam shell. I’ve never seen glass do this, always have seen cracks only. It’s 48x24x12”

Looks like a chunk just got popped off. If there is no other actual crack and its at the top, Id be fine using it. The problem is when you have a fracture where the crack ends in the glass but could continue to spread if pressure is applied.

The chip was knocked off similar to knapping flint to make arrow heads and such.

Based on your measurements this tank holds about 60 gallons of water in which case, wouldn't put too much pressure on this upper corner of the tank (water pressure increases with depth).

Most people will say it's fine but before you move forward with this you should ask yourself this:
  • Do I really want to risk a crack forming in the future (whether it be accidental or not) and putting 60g of water on my floor?
  • Is what I paid for this tank worth risking the thousands of dollars in water damage that it may cause to my home?
Only you can decide. Good luck :)

I wouldn't be worried about that chip on that tank, but I would question the tank itself... Looks to me that the glass panes don't square up. I would wonder if the tank was homemade or re-sealed by the previous owner, and if that is the case then I would agree with what xsnys said above. "Is what I paid for this tank worth risking the thousands of dollars in water damage that it may cause to my home?"

Yea, I didn’t notice it at first, but the panes are offset. I know it’s not homemade, because there are some typical manufacturer notations between the frame. It’s rimless at the top, but not at the bottom. When I look at the bottom, I see no modifications.. it’s weird.
The silicone on the inside look untouched, so idk if something hit it and it knocked the glass over. Glass wont budge/move when I apply pressure.
I have no idea how they would have removed and reinstalled, but something weird happened.

Actually… now that I think about it.. I bet they were messing with that side pane, had it clamped to hard when siliconing and it chip the corner.. or they purposefully slanted the pane to counter the chip…
