I put a new clam in my tank a few weeks ago. I found it this morning laying in the sand. I moved it back intothe rocks and it opened back up, but the mantel is receeded back in quite a bit. Other than that it looks OK. Not sure if soemting is going on or if I just need to wait and see.

Thoughts ?

It isn't happy where you put it. It will probably keep jumping. What do you mean by "receded"?

mantel is pulled back into the shell quie a bit. It is opening and closing normally, but the mantel is not comming out tothe edges of the shell as it had been doing.

Oh, if it looks like this, that is called "gaping", and its usually pretty bad. Theres usually no recovering from that. Youll want to look for parasites (pyram. snails), and check calcium and alkalinity.

but receeded muc more. I thought that hole was it's mouth. It came this way from the LFS and the other clams there were the same. It's just now the thing is receeded very far into the shell. wondering if I should get it out of there before it does any damage.

Sorry to hear that dude, but if thats how it's looking, then it's dieing. I don't think theres anyway for it to recover once it has gone that far. I've lost a few clams in the past and thats how they looked before they just melted away.

Based on personal experience, you'll probably find the "meat" floating around the tank soon, and when you get it out the smell will gag you.

I'm in agreement that it's gone.

And they definitely shouldn't be selling them. Gaping more than that is terminal, without doubt.
