I'm at the beach this week for spring break with my kids and they're finding several different kinds of clams in the surf when they're collecting shells. Would any of them be ok to bring home and put in my tank? We're on the panhandle (Cape San Blas) and the clams are mostly small surf clams (I think they're Atlantic Coquina), so they may require surf conditions to survive.

Anyway, just curious if anyone has tried these in their tank.

I wouldn't do it. Legal reasons and you have no clue what kind of parasite or other nasties may be in it.

agreed, legal stuff aside, there is no telling what else you will be introducing to your tank

I got a large rock I took from the beach in Curaco with no ill effects in my tank.

I was surprised the cruise line didnt take it when it went thru the scanner. :yay:

If you really want them Blue Planet has three that are alive and covered in Zoas. I bought one w/out realizing it was a clam they were attached too..though it might be a muscle of something. either way its neat looking.

I was in the same spot last year in jacksonville. almost brought home one of the coolest looking snails i've ever seen and then i thought about the possibility of parasites. just not worth it if you ask me

Not saying its right or anything. But, most of our livestock we get comes from the ocean, so how is it any different coming directly from the beach/ocean than an lfs?

An lfs doesnt qt everything they get in.

That's why you're supposed to.

yes, I know that. I am asking though what is the difference between getting it directly from the source as opposed to an lfs, besodes legality reasons. I am asking b/c of the resonses from others that say you have no idea what one might introduce to their tank as far as parasites and such go.

The number of items and items themselves collected are controlled based on many different things. Rarity or endangered of course popping into everyone's mind first, but also the fact that something may be harmful in another environment and may not be allowed for sale in that region

i have always played the rule since i don't have a collectors license .. i don't take any thing that has life in it , this might still be illegal or frowned upon but, i have not been to the beach in years.
