Alright so definitely a new aquarium owner question. Is it normal for the inside of the sump and equipment/tubing to get a white film and slimy? Is this something I should be cleaning with regular maintenance?

My sump looks a little gross, but ever since I've banished all of my hermits to the sump, things have been better.

I am guessing what you are seeing is, in large part, due to the recent setup. Think about all that sand dust that was floating around upon initial fill. It had to settle somewhere!

I suspect if you gave everything a good wipe down, you would see it as bad as it is for a while.

Nice build by the way! I am definitely following!

I like that idea. Just hermits or do you employ any snails down there at all?

That's a really good point and thanks for the comment. It's been an awesome project. Still got a lot more to do but it's coming along quick.

Every water change, I wetvac (Lowes bucket head) the sump and overflow to remove detritus. Takes 15 minutes.

That's a good idea. Got a big wetvac on black Friday. It's definitely come in handy so far

Managing the overflow is a key thing - I know I let mine slide more than I should. It's just such a pain to get down to the bottom of the overflow with the canopy and everything in the way.

Of course - the lazy solution is to put small powerheads pointing straight down near the bottom of each overflow. If it's getting blasted, nothing will settle :). I should just take that route haha

I actually have 2 small ones I got super cheap when a LFS was moving locations. I think they would work perfect
