Closed loop via the overflow?

So just asking for some feed back...I've been thinking of dropping a mag 3 or something similar in my overflow with a riser pipe and a locline return. It would act as a internal closed loop without the unsightly look of additional pumps. The only concern is if the overflow can handle the extra input. I'm sure it will increase the flow through the slots and raise the water level. I have a Quiet one 2200(581gph) for the sump return which is way smaller than, say Dylan's mag 24(2400gph) return, both of our tanks are 93 cubes. So I would assume both a Quiet one and a mag 3 still is no where close to 2400gph.
Whacha think?

P.S. Sorry Dylan for using you unknowingly...:D

If I understand correctly I would be concerned if the slots could handle the flow. At the very least, the speed of the water through the slots would increase which may give bad results.

Not as much flow as 2400gph though. It would be around 931gph if I use a mag 3 total flow going through the slots, and yes, you understood my difficult explanation.

I missed the part about Dylan having the same tank and overflow and that he has that much flow. I guess in that case it would be a matter of if the pump and plumbing would physically fit without impeding the flow to the drain. But considering what you do for a living my guess is you already answered that one. LOL. :-).

This is kind of like me telling Matt Ryan how to throw a pass because, after all I did play center back in the late 70s. Hehehehe

I run a Mag 9.5 from my single corner overflow to a closed loop on my standard 90gl ....Yes it does raise the water level (maybe 1/2"), not ever had a problem.

Coooooool....I may try and use a diaphragm pump and make my overflow into a fuge. That way I'm not grinding the little buggers up.

Hey Randy, just to clarify- I have a mag 12 on the 93 cube and it also feeds a matrix reactor, carbon/gfo, and a 30g rimless frag tank.... Not much flow is going through the main tank- maybe 500-700 gph

Oh, my bad. I spent all that day thinking you were crazy...haha.

And the it thickens. LOL.

Well, I am. I probably said mag 24. Who knows what actually came out of my mouth.

Edit: I got me a Mag72 on that bad boy! It's a hemi.

I thought you did...right after you said I could have one of everything in your tank.:whistling:

You hold him down and I will cut us each a frag of everything. But I get that little orange fish he is hiding from everyone. :-)

You stay away!

One of these days I'm just gonna give you that fish.

If we are going to hold him down and cut things...I think a hair cut is in order too. :lol2:
