I am considering the purchase of a 120 gallon tank that has been used for freshwater cichlids. I am new to SW and not entirely sure how to set it up for SW.

I obviously do not have the knowledge to drill anything. Is my best option to use an overflow box to flow to a sump below? I appreciate any advise.

If you haven't already bought the tank I would hold off until you found one that is reef ready.

If this tank is too good a deal to pass up you could look into drilling the back panel and going with the bean animal style.

Drill is not hard as long as it is not tempered glass. For me, I would prefer a non-reef ready tank so I could drill it for a Bean Animal.

It's a style of overflow. I've never seen one in action but it's supposed to be silent and fail-safe.

Just don't

google Bean Anal Bar and Grill............ I hear it is Dylan's favorite "Watering Hole". - rdnelson99

It looks something like this

Yeah Rich, I stole that from someone's signature line!

:-)

I love the one I built. Given a choice I would never use anything else.

I converted my 125 gal freshwater tank and drilled the back (well actually my especially handy hubby did) with two overflows using a "herbie" style. It works well but always seems to need to be adjusted to stay silent. I've had it for 9 months and have finally got to where I can do a water change smoothly. Don't know if that's just me or the system. :D The big problem we had was changing the stand over to accomodate a sump and a large skimmer.
