Coralife Marine Salt

Yeh I guess 50/50. I may play around with the ratios until I get it around 420-450 and 3.5-4.0. I would probably be ok with the alk a little lower, but IO mixes a little on the high side

At the risk of a semi hijack ... does the brand of salt really make that much difference. Ive always used instant ocean and it seems much maligned.

My disasters seem to be more based on my blatant mistakes.

Imo no I have used some of the more expensive salts and instant ocean . I could not tell a dimes difference in my tanks . If any change was noted after switching to IO was improvement due to the price of IO being so much cheaper it afforded me more frequent water changes. I think your last statement is true of most disasters and no one wants to admit to it. I know most all if not all of my problems with my tanks was my absolute fault.

I agree. I would be using instant ocean if I hadn't picked two boxes of rc for a steal.

I speculate that the reason a lot of people have issues (even when they have great husbandry habits) is that they maintain their water shange schedule and switch over to the new salt %100. Depending on what you had been dosing and adding to your tank, you can potentially cause in ionic imbalance. What does this do? Causes one of your major reef building components to precipitate out. This makes it hard to get elevated levels of said element. This can also easily happen by "chasing" numbers and adding too much of one component and not enough of the others.

I try to avoid this when switching salts by blending some of my old salt with some of the new salt. I gradually use less old salt until it is all gone.
