coralline algae

The one thing that I've learned from this club is that there is more then one one to skin a cat. That and ask any two reefers and you might get 3 or 4 opinions ;-)

In my opinion coralline algae will grow when the conditions are ripe for calclifaction as several others have pointed out. What I would do is find out what is limited the coralline from calcification ... testing can tell you that. Then add what is limiting, pretty simple right. Everyone has there favorite way that's where it gets confusing

The way I chose to increase calcium and alkalinty ( which is what my tank was missing) was to add Kalk ( Ms Wages Pickling Lime ) and vinegar... here is an interesting read about how to do it and background info...

This solution will add alk and calcium and decrease nitrates, please read the post about using a good skimmer however, it makes a huge difference.

Good Luck

oh something that I didn't know when I first started, there are quite of few different types of coralline, besides the purple... white red , branching and plating just to name a few

i bought some of the branching coraline from r2g with my pod order last week maybe it will be in tomorrow

You'll have no idea how much to dose unless you know what you already have.

Edit:

True that!!

Ok thanks

Cool... I saw some on ebay and I was tempted to get it but I know very little about that type.If it takes off I wouldn't mind hitting you up for some. R2G is located about an hour north from where I grew up, in Sarasota

Just got my pod order from r2g today nice pods spend a buck get 250 free !! Finto do a lil research on the branching coralline

I got this one."Try not to grow it and see what happens. It will be all over every thing in the tank".Give it some time.

I'm not sure if its going to react like a coral and need to adjust but I'm going to acclimate it and once I'm seeing it grow I'll cut some for ppl , the description said its baseball size so Im sure it will start get in my way before long.
My luck it will cause my dosing to double or triple.
I also ordered an.orange Stereonephthya Coral (carnation coral /red tipped tree coral) it is apparently a photosynthetic , I attempted to do some research on Stereonephthya Coral but most what I found is that its an unknown , the non photosynthetic's are very hard to keep but a few posts I found on different forums say these only require feeding a few times a week and are fairly easy growers.
I am excited to get it in and see it.

Haha.... true that

When I started, I was a bit worried about if it would every start to grow. Don't worry Willie before long you will be complaining that you have to scape it off the glass ;-)

Had to look that one up.. sounds like a pretty cool softy, since you shouldn't have to feed like those NPS ones

It's photosynthetic and moderately easy to keep. They are both commonly referred to as strawberry, carnation, and other names, but this is not to be confused with the expert only NPS Dendronephthya species.
