have a 75 gallon tank with a 8x54 light fixture on it that's made by current USA. would be able to keep a clam, assuming my paras are in check? and if so what type. thanks.

I would say you would have no problem. That is a lot of light on a 75.

Calcium, calcium and more calcium...

Yea but what rob is saying is clams absorb a lot of calcium so you would have to find a way to maintain the proper levels.

The ones in someone elses tank

Good question though, tagging along... my wife wants one.

Wanting a clam some day also. Just wish I had more room on the sandbed.

a sandbed is not the suggested place for a clam. this is not where they are located naturally

All the pics I have seen they are on the sand. Are you saying they should be on the rocks? Kind of like Jack Daniels???? :-). Seriously I thought the the sand bed was the best place.

clams should be placed on the rocks, dersa (sp?) clams are usually the cheapest, try one of the first before you drop $100 on a maxima clam

Derasa is your best bet. They will do better with the lighting you have, and are hardier than Maxima or Crocea clams.

Derasa clams are just fine in the sandbed, I think they actually prefer it there. They are also the only giant clam that can completely close up as adults.

How big do the Derasa Clams get? My space is limited. The perfect spot is shaded a bit so I don't see that as being an option. Guess I am just going to have to buy a bigger tank. hehehehehe

Maximas Prefer the rocks, but it seems impossible to get them to stick. I keep mine in the sand, and they do great. They normally just attach directly to the bottom glass(shallow sand bed).

Calcium calcium calcium. I know robb said it earlier, but I thought it was important enough to say twice.

Lighting is important as well. I've never tried clams with t5s, but I assume that they would be happiest close to the top.
