I'm soooo freakin mad right now that I don't know whether or not to bite nails or cry. For those that know me, you know that I sold my 93 cube and was in the process of upgrading to a 180. I had to put everything in temporary housing in my insulated, conditioned garage. I have a 150 stock tank going with sand and rock, a 55 that housed corals and livestock and a 40 with more corals and livestock.

I couldn't get heaters to work properly so I was having a little temp fluctuation in the tanks. I believe this was the cause of an ick break out in both tanks so I dosed with Stress Coat and Vitamin C along with feeding garlic soaked flake. First day....everything is fine and fish are eating and healthy. Second day......CRASH in the 55! All fish, shrimp, snails are dead yet everything in the 40 is alive. I don't get it.

Before anybody asks what my water params are....to late. I immediately extracted everything that was dead and did a 20% water change. Heading back out to do a water change on the 40. This is just a bummer because I had some of those fish for a long time (you guys have seen my Hippo Tang and Potter's Angel). This is where one has a serious debate within themselves whether to stay in or get out.

Man I hate that. :-(. I do know how you feel. Lost all but on fish when I had brook. The sufferance was it stretched out over a couple weeks. Stool, a day or a week doesn't change the hurt and disappointment. Let me know if I can help in any way.

Thanks guys. I know you all understand how this feels. One minute you want to throw in the towel and say "I'm done" and the next it makes you so determined to make it better the next time. So far, no corals are affected. Pulled my GBTA out and put in the stock tank which wasn't dosed. I just can't figure out why one tank and not the other.

You will come back. Hard to imagine but it will get better.

Sorry to hear man. I have some coral frags ill give u when u get the 180 up. Dont give up. We all have gone through similar events. Keep ur head up and get that 180 going.

Sorry for your losses. Like everyone else has said we have all been there at one point or another and things do get better.

Thanks Jimmy...I greatly appreciate that.

Dude, so sorry. I can totally imagine wanting to give up after something like that. Heck, sometimes just fighting algae makes me consider -- fleetingly -- giving up. Good thing you have this bunch to keep you going :)

Sorry to hear Jeff... those fish were really cool. My daughter was even telling Rit (and all his customers) about your stuff later that day.

So it hit only hit one tank and only the fish in that tank... odd. Can I do anything to help

I don't know if you're interested but I have a six line another member didn't want, I gladly let you have.

Well that at least makes me smile. Yeah...weird that it only hit one tank and I dosed both exactly the same. Still watching the 40 to make sure it's just not a delayed reaction. Thanks for the offer to help. I've just got to gather myself now and get a direction going.

Edit:

My last big failure taught me to quit wanting bigger. The more you have, the more work to maintain, more cost, and bigger demise when the proverbial fan is defecated upon. ;) Sorry for your loss, I know how depressing that can be. I gave up, and it took me almost 2 years to get back in, so I wish I hadn't.

You still have half a setup, so throwing in the towel is giving up on them. Buck up, and use it as a chance to make it different from what you were planning?

Dude... I think that we've all been there, and I'm actually going through a very similar situation right now myself.

After my QT nightmares which ended up costing me probably around $750 in fish & equipment, I abandoned it to go with fish I KNEW were healthy. Only to put them in my tank and have an ich outbreak. So then it's a proper UV $$$ just to have 3 more prized and EXPENSIVE fish perish (including the **ONE** fish that my wife absolutely adored - our ~4 year old mandarin, but he may have been coincidental, I just don't know anything anymore).

It's sickening and maddening and makes me want to scream.

In the end, I'm still in it. I just don't know what the heck to do with any of it. I guess right now it's a 2 month wait to let the UV do its thing and hope that I can eventually add some more fish without killing them.

Bottom line, you may be near rock-bottom, but you're in good company.

Sorry to hear this Jeff. I know how you feel. I went to bed one evening and got up the next with my nice purple tang dead and some of my corals. I felt like putting in the towel but, pulled myself up..corrected the problem and went head on into the hobby. Right now I am battling a high nirate problem...making some progress with it and have not lost anything yet.
So pull yourself up and keep going!
