What filtering properties, or general benefits, does crushed live rock in the sump provide?

I would say it offers bacterial colonization opportunity and VERY minimal mechanical filtration.

I've never messed with it.

Nope, that's the whole point of the post.
I had a feeling it would be a similar reaction as bio balls or feared worse yet that it would be like a canister filter.
