curing base rock

I brought back some real nice, very porous rock from a recent trip to Hawaii. No it is not black lava rock like I talked about in an earlier thread. This is the white stuff. It was taken from the beach and not the ocean, so its been bone dry for some time. What is the recommended process for curing to release the nitrates and phosphates?

The purpose of this thread is for advice on curing rock.

Throw it in an old trash can or container and add saltwater,pump,heater,and a piece of shrimp or a piece of live rock to get it started.

I imagine that it is like curing any rock, introduce a bacterial source ( a small piece of established rock from an existing system or a bottle of bacteria) and a food source. A small powerhead for flow would help has well. The food source can be fish food ammonia, rdnelson99 posted a thread on on the ammonia method. All these things are in your tank already.
If it was me I'd be concerned with any hitchhikers and would sanitize the rock before hand. You would be surprised and what can survive.


I include the story because there is a moral to it as well and that is

The fact is that it is against Federal law to take anything out of a national park and the ranger decided to give the law a little more bite.

So if you took the rock from a National Park you committed a Federal Crime, if you took it from the State of Hawaii then you stole from the State of Hawaii. Irregardless both are a crime. When I was younger I received a citation or two for this, when I grew up I issued a citation or two for removing public property from State Park Service. One of those things
