Not sure if I'm even relatively close to this being a possibility but. I was informed that it was a possibility because I used recycled sand that was not cleaned properly.

I replaced my sand with new sand and did about 10g water change in the process. My corals have never seemed happier everything perked up and looked better. My flow is very strong in my tank I swapped from oolite to crushed coral so I could turn my mp10 up.

I tested my nitrate before water change and it was at 10 ppm after the change out it registered at .2

However I'm still getting cyano outbreak .

What leads me to believe it may be a salt issus is that I'm down to the last bit of salinity in bucket I've had for over 1 1/2 years (gotta love how long it last in a small tank) but the little that's left is all stuck together like it has absorbed moisture and has to be broken up.

I know I can use chemicals to fix the immediate problem but I would like to know the cause of it

What do u guys think ?

I just thankfully beat Cyano. It really is a plague.

My personal opinion is that it is not related to old salt. Instead, it is a nutrient problem. My parameters were < 1 Nitrate and .02 phosphate, held there with Vodka dosing. Despite this, it probably took 10, 20 gallon water changes in 120 gallon in combination with a 3 day blackout before it disappeared for good. It has unbelievable resiliency.

Just keep manually removing it at every water change. Do your absolute best to get every piece. You'd do better to halve your water change amount and do it twice as often. That way, it has less time to regain its strength between water changes.

It certainly is hard to get rid if my system is low in nutrients . I usually do multiple small water changes. I just did a larger volume one this time to compensate for removing all the old sand. I will keep at it and if all else fails chemiclean it is lol
