Is a filter necessary for cycling? I'm setting up a frag tank n I'm waiting for the filter for it to arrive. In the mean time I was wondering if I could get a head start on the cycling by adding the sand, seeding with a cup of sand from main tank n just having some PH circulating the water around.

BLUF: No you will not need it for cycling

but...yes and no. It depends on what you're entire purpose of filtering unit is. You won't need to remove waste so much, but if you have a biologic aspect of your filter that doesn't get fully replaced then it would become part of the cycle. Plus the filter will add extra flow, and you don't want stagnant water. What sorta filter did you order?
