I see these pumps are supposed to run external as well as internal to a sump. Has anyone run one externally? I want to eliminate the heat it is producing.. right now i have one in my sump as a return pumpl.

I wouldn't run a Mag externally. They are prone to leaking when used in that manner. You'd be better off either replacing it with a cooler-running submersible, or getting a proper in-line pump, IMO.

I keep thinking it is giving me alot of heat. Would you think thats true? I am having a hard time staying below 83

It might be contributing. Have you tried a clip-on fan over the sump?

What kind of lighting do you have and how close to the surface is it? Glass top or mesh/eggcrate?

Lots of things can add and retain heat - check your heater too to make sure it's not set too high or stuck on.

Actually it's usually not the plumbing fittings that leak. It's the volute that usually leaks.

Glad yours doesn't, but most of them will leak sooner or later. I've mopped up after my fair share of them.

I too have used them externally with no problems. But they are less than ideal. If you are will to plumb externally, buy an external pump. You won't regret it.

Yeah, the gasket ring is very small and fragile. Poor poor design

OMG... both Jeremy *AND* Charlie agree with me at the same time.

This is a sure sign of the Apocalypse! If Raj chimes in in agreement, I'm going to have to put on my tinfoil hat and head to my bunker.

It's on!

I'd NEVER use a danner mag externally. They're almost guaranteed to leak (although there have been exceptions..like a smoker who doesn't get cancer); are you willing to take the risk? And when used internally, they're nothing but massive heaters!

Get an external pump and eliminate the heat issue altogether.

That's it... I'm glad I stocked up on tinfoil when it was on sale and I had coupons.

Not only am I making a new hat, but I think I'll make a full set of armor out of my tinfoil stockpile and head down to my bunker, and wait for the world to end.

Jenn :dunce:

Everyone above is wrong . But I will let it slide this time and go along with it

I encourage Thanh to use mag pumps externally on his tanks. They'll be fine..don't worry :)
