I wasn't sure if this is the right place to post this, so Mods, please let me know if it's not, and the right forum. This might be the last time I order anything live online. I've had some very negative experiences with UPS deliveries recently, and today's has done it for me! I ordered a small, 1 inch tomini tang from NYAquatic, to be shipped overnight, next day air, and delivered today. Just got an email from UPS, saying that the delivery is delayed until tomorrow! I don't know how NYAquatic packs their fish for shipping, but I'm not at all confident that the fish will be alive when I get it. Has anyone had any experience with shipments from NYAquatic? Is there even a minute chance that it will survive the delay? I've been wanting this fish for a long time now, so this situation is just...ugh, I don't have words the mods will allow.

Like york1 said, let them know the package was delayed. My order that was due Tuesday from them was delayed 1 day in Kentucky, 3 of 5 fish were DOA. 1 Watanbei angel, 1 Imperator angel, and a wrasse. The blonde naso and flame angel are alive, but not eating great. I requested a refund for those fish and a refund for the shipping, since I didn’t get “next day air”.. UPS is supposed to refund next day postage that don’t make it next day, but I’m not sure if that’s next day saver or not.. I’ve yet to get a response from them.

Anyway.. they double/triple bag their shipments, with weird up-down-up structure, with metal crimps. Normally in large bags, depending on the fish. I’d recommend, breaking things down to a single bag to temp acclimate them, but normally the metal crimps aren’t sealed like bands would be so the ammonia clock starts ticking, once you break down to fewer bags, so temp acclimate as you deem fit

I take videos of me opening the box, and checking the bag. Check to see if the fish are alive in the bag. If not take pics and see if they need additional info, if dead, the refund policy has notes of not getting rid of the fish until they say or have certain pics.

I just got the delivery an hour ago. The fish was dead. I called NYAquatic yesterday and told them about the delay. The guy I spoke with said they pack the fish well, with a heat pack that's good for 72 hours. But when I opened the box they sent me, there were 3 pieces of newspaper on top of the bag and that's all. No heat pack whatsoever. How is the fish supposed to survive shipping, coming from New York, in winter, with no heat pack at all? I emailed them all the necessary information and photos, so we'll see how they handle this. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go and cry over this beautiful little fish that didn't make it to a nice new home in my tank. Hope the weekend goes better than this week has.

Sorry to hear that. Weird there was no heat pack. This is the first time I’ve had a shipping issue with fish or coral, can be very disheartening. Let me know if they refund you for the fish and shipping.

sorry to hear that. most of the time the online vendor's policy does state that they're not responsible for weather or other other reasons for delay outside of their control. maybe you can negotiate to cover half of the reshipment cost but it's not guaranteed. best of luck!

All of this is making me less and less inclined to consider ordering fish online.

I've done it in the past, but with all the shipping services sucking these days, and the very careful CYA the sellers seem to be doing to insulate themselves from return/DOA claims, it's seeming more and more like a bad deal and that I'd be better off asking my favorite LFS to order for me instead, even if I have to drive an hour each way to get there.

While their policies do state that they're not liable for shipping issues, I've had plenty of issues with things dying in transit because of shipping issues, and not a single reputable seller has resisted shipping replacements. I've had great experiences with Inverted Reef, FisHotel, AlgaeBarn, Top Shelf Aquatics, Saltwater Aquarium, and BRS.

Seems to me seller should recoup shipping cost from shipper if shipping conditions aren't met
Seriously, especially since seller is known to be selling live things, and should have an agreement in place between the two of some sort, like actually placing priority on such things.

UPS and FedEx both lost my birth certificate - despite being marked priority first class and insured - like, 3 times in less than 2 months. First it was the copy lost on its way to me, second was the original lost going both directions. They simply give no 💩s, and nobody seems willing or able to take them to task for it.

Unfortunately, even when I ship items. I don’t warranty DoA on shipping delays. It’s the good and bad of paying more locally vs dealing with shipping.

If I lived closer to Atlanta, I would go through a LFS (the superb ones), even though they’d charge an arm and a leg. However, some of these online deals beat LFS cost significantly even with shipping, in some cases, like ordering a multitude of fish at once. To be fair though, I’d argue that some of these online vendors are probably more suitable than somewhere like The Fish Store in Chamblee though (no offense to fish store regulars). This is my last online shopping experience for fish though. I just remember gem tangs being 1k+ and black tangs not being buyable at like 3k, so I figured with some solid QT NYA had some decent deals and large following on insta.

Especially if UPS refunds next air that doesn’t make it next day (unless major weather) .. and these are UPS next day.
But they have enough loopholes in their fine print to refute any refund claim for the Next Day Air shipping. If they worked as hard to deliver on time as they do to get out of refunding money, there would never be a late delivery lol.

I can’t trust ups near me so I always do hold for pickup at the facility. Keeps it in temp control and lets you grab it early vs waiting for a driver.
Mine will shove stuff in the mailbox, if it will fit. Most recently it was 3 small boxes of live plants and a small box of live snails, in ~45ºF weather.

They find an excuse to refute issuing a refund, even if it's obvious that they should. Or make you jump through so many hoops it's not worth the effort and aggravation.

That would work out better, except that with my health as it is, I can wake up on any given day and barely be able to get up and walk from one room to the next, much less drive. And getting my SO to drive anywhere that isn't absolutely necessary turns into a Whole Thing.

i have ordered many many times from ny aquatic, they have always done me right with doa, delays, etc...
