I recently purchased a Deresa Clam and placed it on a rock close to the light (4 t5's) (I'm aware they are "sand clams" but I have a gobie that loves to dump sand everywhere). It has locked itself inside of a rock. My only concern is that as it grows it may not have enough room to open completely. What should I do?... Should I move the clam by cutting it's "feet" from the rock or will it eventually decide to move. I just hate to move him he seems to comfortable.

Thanks

Well the good things about clams are, they will "move" if they can. If it's attached to something, it's happy. I'd say just monitor it as it grows and if it seems concerning, like it's not opening as much anymore (and this will take at least a year) then maybe look into moving it. But if it's unhappy, it'll move by "jumping".

and never cut the foot, Ive heard that is certain death right there. how high up? derasa's are lower light loving clams right?

Well, there is a diff from cutting the foot and the byssal threads. The threads are fine, but you really shouldn't cut them if you don't need to because you do run the risk of damaging the foot. But clams can be picky of their environment, if they aren't happy, they will let you know.

+1 of everything everyone has posted. From the looks of the picture. Your clam looks really happy. If you notice that it isn't open as much then it may be unhappy. In which case you just need to poke at it to see if it let go of the rock. I've had a few clams and they always let go of whatever they are attached to if their unhappy. Then all you have to do is just move it without having to cut anything. You never want to cut it's legs or anything on the clam period! Good luck! Nice looking clam btw
