Does a Diatom bloom ever get sort of snotty looking on the rocks? My 40b has been set up for about a 1.5-2 months. Majority of stuff in my tank was brought over from my 29g, stuff not brought over was some bleached out rock and reef grade sand. So I was not really expecting a big bloom, but knew id get something.

About a week ago I rearanged some rocks and then BOOM next morning a hugh bloom.

Now I am familiar with what diatom looks like on glass and sand and know its like that for a bit, but I dont remember the rocks, all of them, looking hairy or snotty. As fast as it came on im sure its diatom but wanted some outside opinion.

Look at the first part of this video. Its really hard to tell in the rest if it but this was the best shot of whats on the rocks.

Edit: video didnt work, let me try and upload another way

Semper fi and happy early birthday. When I had my first bloom it looked really snotty on my rocks so its posible

Ohh Rah!

Thanks for looking

What I saw on the sand in the middle of the vid looks just like what I had but the stuff at the very beginning of the vid looks nothing like what I had. Of course that is after my tons of experience of one salt water tank that is 4 months old so take that for what it is worth.

Yeah, me to. When my 29 g cycled I had it onthe sand and glass but cannot remember if it was on the rocks like. I have looked a tons of pictures online and video and similiar stuff I have seen all comes back to diatom. Plus (im going to kick myself for this) but what are the chances that I have somthing else crop up at the same time and as fast as teh bloom I am going through.

To me very likely on my 75 I went through a diatom, bubble, and green hair all at same time. It was a sad sad intro to the hobby.

LOL bcrueter. I went through all of those as well. Fortunately, it was one after another and none got too bad. I forget what it was I did to stop the hair algae but the emerald crabs did a fantastic job on the bubble algae. I notice now and again one of two bubble pop up on top of one of my power heads but I don't worry about it. I figure if it moves anywhere else in the tank the crabs will get it. :-)

I had it bad but I jumped in to gungho and with lots of bad info once I swished to to and put a yellow tang and some crabs in my tank was clear in less then a week....then cyno rolled in but that's a whole mother story

I think I messed up. I dove in the tank and what is on the rocks is not coming off as easy. i started to read about hair algae and think I might have just caused an outbreak. I was pulling some HA off a rock and then letting the filter take it away. Not think ing it would cause it to spread.

Curious if that was an autocorrect thing or if it was intentional. LOL

Edit:

Oh no!. Hope it doesn't get out of hand. I will look back and see what I did to get rid of it but like I said, I only had a little bit so it may not be a good solution for you. Of course all the old things still apply. Don't overfeed, cut back on lighting..........
