Well I have jumped into the Mandarin world. The lil fella just came in today, I asked the folks at the LFS if they wouldn't mind feeding him, they said sure. I was expecting him to not eat a thing, well to my surprise he took right away to frozen brine and mysis. I decided to take him home and place him in my 28 nano. Did I make the right call? I've been wanting one but have heard the horror stories of them not eating prepared foods, the reason I got him was that he ate both mysis and brine with no questions asked.

Do you have a good population of pods in your tank. I wouldn't add one unless I did. They eat alot and the pods are their main food source. Glad he eats and I hope its enough for him

I'm pretty sure I have quite a few copepods, I have about 40-45 pounds of live rock. I know a bit of an overkill for a 28 but I like a lot of rock work. The only reason why I got him was because he readily took to mysis and brine. Also the LFS does not feed PE Mysis like I do. PE Mysis has a high content of protein so I'm hoping that will be enough for him, along with brine that I feed as well. I was reading about the ORA Mandarin so maybe I got lucky and got one of theirs.

If hes eating prepared food already you might be in luck. Mine was starving what I got him fro LFS but has been doing great in my tank for months and grown alot, but its all pods. If it looks like he's losing weight you could probably make a cheap fuge outta a big plastic pickle jar or something and feed him naturally

John what kind of Mandarin did you get? I have two Target Mandarins, they both like bloodworms, mysis, brine and cyclopeeze. Good luck with him/her! Holley

It seems mandarins must be getting smarter bc mine took to bloodworms and pe mysis.

Thanks for all the input everyone. He's not a spotted mandarin, he is the other kind. Great looking fish, one of my favorites I was just hesitant because of the feeding concerns. But as mentioned before he took to frozen at the LFS no problem, and I took him. He's in the tank and has made his home, he likes the spot over by the surface skimmer. Have not seen him eat yet, but since he ate at the LFS I'm not worrying too much about it. Just probably getting used to his new home.

John you may want to feed him 2x a day unless your tank is packed with pods, mine pick at the rocks all day long. :fish:
