Dive gear question

i wish we had the extra funds, i would make kirsten do the course with you. shes a big chicken for some reason. lol

excuses excuses excuses...go ahead and say it man...she said no and she rules the roost...blame it all on money, you ain't kiddin' anybody

yeah she controls SOME THINGS but its because i let her. lol
shes scared to dive i think. she experienced it once in cali and
got scared about the breathing underwater part.

first line is a load of...
second part is believeable and understandable

what were you just pming me about???lol

Hackman72;445245 wrote: @porpoise- I'm definitley going all new for just that reason. As for the BCD, I was told you're better to try it on and wear it around a bit before you buy it to feel for comfort. Kinda feeling it out to see if the way it fits will get on yor nerves in a short amount of time...keeping in mind also that it will be different underwater than in a diveshop.

@wmboots- I assume the PADI on line is the same as they'll teach @ seaventures. I might give thm a call and seewhere we're at as far as doing the online in conjuction with the dive course itself.

the online courses are your book work and videos you will still do chapter reviews etc with the instructor at seaventures but you will find that you will have more in water time doing the online class. call Wyatt and let him or one of the instructors over there guide you through the process you will be more than happy with the results and Wyatt's prices aren't too bad either

will do. I appreciate the input. I'll give'em a call before the week is out.

when i got mine years ago i paid $250 which included 1 dive at a local lake. then i had to pay my own way and seat on the boat for the master dive. prices have rocketed since i see.

Others have pretty much covered it, but I thought I'd throw in my two cents (about 200 dives since 1991):

- You should be able to get equipment for < $2500 pretty easily. This is one sport where KISS applies (keep it simple, stupid). Buy what you need, but no more.
- As wmboots said, try things out in the pool. This is your life support, and you should feel comfortable in it. There's no point in having the "best rated" BC if it doesn't fit your body. Yes, it's worth paying the "brick and mortar" premium here
- Plan on buying a dive computer. You can also run a reef tank without a skimmer, but there's no good reason not to. Just learn it's function and it's limitations - it's there to provide information, not to think for you. (This is the only gear recommendation I'll make: I like the Oceanic Veo series dive computer because they're simple, effective, easy to read, and have one button. KISS)
- Unless you have a very specific need (and you'd know it), don't buy your own tanks - anywhere you go will have tanks and a filling station.
- Again, be careful of the "must have" gadgets. Stores love it when newbies come in with handfuls of cash. There's no problem with renting for a dive trip or two before deciding what's really important.
- Have fun - it's a great sport!:wine:

@ricksconnected - actually, NAUI is older than PADI - 1959 vs 1966, and is still relatively common today. SSI started in 1970. There are plenty of options - PADI just seems to advertise the most, for better or worse.

I was certified as an apprentice diver 20 years ago through PDIC, then when I graduated from Highschool upgraded to PADI Advanced Open Water..

I've heard that PADI is the only school teaching tables any more.. Tables in my honest opinion are essential (not just in case your computer fails). They help you to understand the significance that depth and pressure play on both your body and the air mixture you're breathing.

truth is, you'll probably never need them, but then again.. You'll probably never need a pistol for self defense, either...

Any school that doesn't teach tables IMO is cutting corners. makes me wonder what other corners they may be cutting when they cut a big one like learning how to use dive tables to calculate the effects of multiple dives within a short period of time.

what happens if your computer craps out on you half way through a 10 dive week long vacation? (any "new" computer you use won't take nitrogen accumulated over previous dives into consideration)..

all that being said... you should be able to get into some good equipment for less than $1750, of course you can't get the best equipment at that price, but realistically, unless you're going after your divemaster's or rescue diver's certifications, you're going to want something that will take abuse, and will function well without constant adjustment and a rigorous maintenance schedule.

wmboots;445240 wrote: buy a computer you will use it and as for tables I can tell you from years of teaching there are very few students I could call on 6 months after being certified that could tell me how to use their tables and I was and am a stickler on how to use tables and in the end I always suggested buying a backup computer or citizens dive watch

I know my tables......a Good NAUI student always remembers...

Todd knowing you I can imagine you did remember your dive tables before you started dive master course only because you are by nature a meticulus person but just in case I am wrong how much of the tables did you really recall before you started your dm course
Hey by the way when were you going to bonaire I just received a flyer with a special for april or may I will have to recheck but may jump on it

Bill I ALWAYS remembered my tables.......even before DM......in fact, I pulled them out on a dive in Destin when a dude without a computer or tables was diving on a morning trip.....he said he would dive with his buddies computer, after the first dive........he was going to dive again on the 2nd tank before the required top time because his buddies where going in.....I pulled them out and showed him that he went too deep on the first dive....told him he was down too long on top of it and should not go in again.....he said he was going in..I went to the Captain told her the deal..she made him sit it out.......

The last thing I needed on a vacation dive was to deal with his dead *** on my vacation......then that would have killed my entire day in paperwork...so yep I know 'em and always will...cause stupid *** divers still exist....(most likely they are PADI divers :) )

Bonaire trip is June 12 I believe.

Naw PADI still teaches tables not like some of these other fly by nights like SDI, SSI, PADI and oh yea whats that PADI knockoff something like NAUE or NAUI something like that :lol2:
NAW like I said knowing Todd I was pretty sure you remembered your tables but seriously I do wish SSI and SDI would start teaching them again instead of pushing computers because they are a good $300 - $1,200 up sale and puts another diver out there without any knowledge of the physics of depth and atmospheric pressures

I take my tables with me on dives. I leave them clipped to a bungee in a hip pocket and they stay nice and streamlined, don't dangle, and are easily used underwater. I still look at my tables before I go down to plan out my dives, even if sometimes I will let the NDL slide due to multi-level diving and use the computer, but atleast I knew what my NDL was at my deepest depth. I'm also one that will never push the computer or NDL and never come close to it.
