I bought four emerald crabs last weekend for my 90 gallon tank, and 2 dozen hermit crabs. The only other thing in the tank is a chocolate chip starfish and 2 clown fish. The hermits population have been slowly going down over the past few days to about a donzed. I figured they were just hidding. I came home today and found one of my emeralds chopping away one of my hermits. Have the emeralds been eating my hermits?

Maybe......an underfed crab will eat whatever it can get. Did you see the hermit.......shell and all? Or is it possible the emerald was eating the molt?

I saw the crab on top of the shell and legs of a hermit sticking out of it.

Iv never Hurd anything about that myself , there filter feeders that also pick detrite from the rocks , but they will eat anything that's dead (easy meal) don't count them out though , usually if one gets aggressive or develops a taste for clown fish its usually an under feeding situation.
Have you found any empty shells from the hermits , my pistol shrimp will occasionally kill stuff if he feels threatened. Perhaps you have a mid night killer hiding among your rock work .
