Dorm Room 5.5g Nano!

I've finally gotten around to taking some updated photos of my 5.5 gallon. I've had this tank for about a year now and it is currently at my home in Conyers but was once in my dorm at Georgia Southern University. It's been through quite a bit...several 3 hour car rides, macro algae spawns, and carpet surfing fish! All in all its been a great little tank and quite a trooper! In August it will undergo another location transfer to my apartment in Statesboro! In the meantime here are specs and pictures!

Very nice. I've been considering a 5.5 or a 6.6 bookshelf from petco

Ha, its funny you mention the 6.6. This tank was birthed from the bookshelf 6.6. I really liked the layout but the plastic it was made of was TERRIBLE! It scratched real easily and was kinda foggy. I had to sacrifice the cool layout of the 6.6 for something more compact and travel worthy.

Tank looks great, especially after multiple moves! I feel ya on trying to keep a tank while in school... I have questioned meals or new coral before Keep it up!

I know bdesper311, I think I'd lose my mind if I didn't have my reef at school!

Straydog, I feed my goby Prime Reef Flake every day and dose Kent Nano Reef AB every other day. But I've noticed a halt in my growth. The tank went a while without any fish and thats when I noticed my growth slowing. I'm hoping that the addition of the goby will help things out. I used to have to trim my Xenia weekly, now I never trim it. Has anyone experienced anything like this?

Great tank. I would recommend getting rid of the yellow stone polyps...unless you really like them.

I've been feeding 1/4 cube of frozen reef plankton and 2oz of microvore twice a week and have seen some new growth

Thanks! I enjoy the yellow polyps. I've had that particular colony for probably 5 years. It's been fragged several times and seen 4 different tanks. Plus they don't spread as fast as they used to.

I trashed the 6.6... I mean the material was very bad. By the time I was done with it, it looked like it had been drug across concrete. Every little thing scratch it.

I don't think there's any strict definition for nano and pico tanks (although I could be wrong), but from what I've seen pico is anything smaller than a 10 gallon. The line for nanos is more debatable, as some say anything under 300 gallons is a nano tank.

Thanks! As far as my water volume...well its a 5.5 with an AquaClear 70 filter that I think hold about .5 a gallon of water. With the rock and sand displacing some water I'd imagine mine total water volume is around 5 gallons.

As Brianjfinn said the dividing line for nano/pico is highly debatable and simply opinion. As for me I'd say anything under 8 gallons is a pico and and between 8gl - 40gl is a nano. But like I said, just opinion...but all I've ever known are pico and nano tanks! The thought of 55 gallons is HUGE to me!
