Dosing pump location question

So where do you typically place a peristaltic dosing pump? It would seem to me if it's to far above the supply container, it won't pull fluid due to gravity. Do you have to "pre-start" some how? This is my first go with one so I'm learning.

I use a peristaltic pump for my ATO and if memory serves me correct it keeps a siphon. It does take a little while to get anything to pump into the tank the first time but after that its instantly adds

as far as hight i dont think you have to worry about it unless youre pulling up extreame distances (like up to the next story or something) because once there is liquid inside the line it stays there until the pump starts moving and pressure isnt an issue because of the way the pump works.
