Two weeks ago I purchased an acan eye and my peppermint shrimp devoured it over night. I then purchased a second one, thinking maybe there was just something on the first which made it go after it. The peppermint shrimp devoured it in two days. Yesterday, they starting attacking a moon brain. Any suggestions? I am not feeding them anything besides the pellets that I am feeding the fish. Thoughts? Suggestions? Do I just need to stay away from coral that is in this sort of shape as their are similarities in form between these type of corals. They have left zoanthids, mushrooms and polyps alone.

Are you sure you have a Peppermint shrimp and not a Camel shrimp?

To be honest, I would not able to differentiate. But when I purchased it from LFS that is what they told me. I purchased the two to eat aptisia that accompanied a GPS I had purchased from the LFS the preceding week.

Camels have a more pronounced hump, there are other differences but that's what I look for.

I have had a problem with my peppermint shrimp digging on my large coral mushroom. It's about 12 inches across, they put a one inch hole in it, moved it to a tank without peps. It is fine now, they like to eat the mucus it produces to heal itself. Holley

I will post a picture later. One of my thoughts is to trap it, but I guess I will have to come up with some sort of manner by which to do that and unfortunately I suck at that sort of thing. Once trapped, I'll see if LFS will take it back.

I was sold some shrimp that were supposed to be peppermints, but were actually camel shrimp.

True peps are pretty timid, where as many other ornamental shrimp, including camel, are quite aggressive.

So the LFS said that I could return the shrimp and I did. They were surprised in fact to see that they were camel shrimp.

My peppermint shrimp come out to investigate anything I put into the tank including my hand. It is a little creepy having little shrimp legs and whiskers crawling on your hand. I have to chase them away but then they come right back.

I bought mine to eat some small aptasia that I received with some live rock. They did their job so I think they are just hungry.

If your peps are hungry, they could find some corals yummy I suppose. I also feed my lone fish pellets and he doesn't let many pass him by.

Based on the pictures I've seen, the camels have the hump and more white markings as compared to the dark red markings on the peppermint.

my shrimp looked just like what you have marked as the peppermint shrimp. It had no white markings, but the LFS said it was not the shrimp they typically sale. The owner also told me that their are peppermints from differnt locations. I will miss the little guys as they were fun to watch, but they also made me lose about $40 worth of coral.
