Ecotech Vortech Pumps

Thanks everyone. I've been debating for a few days and it seems like I'm making the right decision.
;)

I hurts to pull the trigger and spend that much on a "powerhead" but in the long run it's a great investment.

You are going to be amazed at the undertow that they create. Soak them in 50/50 vinegar water about once a year to keep them clean.

It was hard for me considering my slush fund is not as big as others are but once i did i was happy

Honestly, even at their ridiculous pricepoint I think they are underated! Seriously. The amount of good things they do for your tank goes beyond making SPS happy. Just the ability to create undertow to the point the sandbed and rock stays clean of detritus is simply amazing.

What mode does this?

Congrats on the purchase. You'll love it. I was hesitant to spend that much on a pump myself but the hype finally got to me. In my BC29 I never really have to run it over ~65%. I already plan on 2 MP40's plus my MP10 on my 135.

No one else mentioned this so I figured I would. With an 8 gallon tank you will literally have that MP10 on the lowest setting all the time, but if you ever upgrade in size it will be a good thing to have around :)

Great point...Vortechs are fine pumps, but not on an 8 gallon tank IMO. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong here, but wouldn't an MP10, even on lowest setting, be too strong for such a small tank?

If he has a K nano in there now. Thats about 240gph, and according to the website the MP10 at its lowest setting is 200 gph. So yea, the pump at 5% power should be fine, lol.

Yeah, hard to justify for such a small tank. Honestly it's probably overkill for my 29gal but still very nice to have. Doubt there'd be any dead spots! Also, if the tank is bare bottom the MP10 could be cranked up a little more.

I was gonna say the same.

On another forum, someone has a MP40 in a 10x10... ....mostly SPS though

And this won't be my last tank. This will hold me until I get a house and get something MUCH bigger :D

Yup, according to the website. But Ecotech also recommends the MP60 for a 120 gallon tank , which is overkill to the nth degree, IME. I have one MP60 on the right and left side of my six foot by 3 foot 300 DD sps tank, and I can only run them at 40% without completely blowing the substrate everywhere. What I am saying is that you can't always trust the ratings, even though overperformance is certainly preferable to underperformance.

Put an MP60 on a 120 gallon tank and run it anywhere near full throttle and it will resemble a flushing toilet!!!!

I hope MooseBranch reports back ater he gets his MP10 set up.

On an 72 LPS/mixed tank, I'd probably use one MP40 or two MP10s with flow adjusted down. On an SPS tank two MP10s, or if you think you might upgrade (larger tank) in the future and can afford the extra scratch, two 40s with flow adjusted down some.

I have a 100 gallon cube that is a mixed LPS/softy reef, and I use 1 MP40 throttled down on it, and I have plenty of flow.

MP10s would not make the upgrade from a 72 bow to say, a 120 or similar/larger because the thickest glass you can use mp10s with is 3/8", and most tanks 75 gallons and up have 1/2" thick glass.

Just finished drilling a 6' - 125 and the glass on it is 3/8".

Been a while since I owned an aquarium with an 18" width. Maybe 75s and 90s are 3/8" as well? My GC 100 cube, Oceanic Tech 45 and Tech 120, AGA 210, Marineland 150 DD, 300 DD, and 265 were all 1/2". Glass prolly gets thicker when you graduate to a 24" width.
