My friend went out and got himself a 6g edge and wants some coral. He's brand new to this and I've told him to join ARC but for now I'm his resource. I've seen folks replace the stock bulbs with these
a> but I'm still unclear about lighting. Will these support softies

6 gallons is very hard for someone new to saltwater. Larger is alot easier to keep up with

I just sold my 6gal edge. I put two 8 watt 50/50 compact flourescent bulbs over it, they dont require a ballast, just a normal lamp socket. They also fit in the stock canopy. I was able to keep softies and even a few sps frags. The coraline growth in the tank was amazing.

+1 It is going to be very difficult to maintain any life in such a small tank. The Edge is especially difficult. NOT reccomended for someone new to the hobby. Bad idea.

Google Eco Pico

2 strips of 3 LEDs works perfectly.

I wouldn't attempt SPS in an Edge

I agree but its what he wants. He is actually more interested in coral than fish so his bioload should be manageable. I suggestion to him was to focus on mushrooms and soft coral which will give him the movement he likes in my tank. The good thing is his apartment is just a few down from mine so I'll be able to help with my 1 year of experience... thank goodness for the arc.

Oh, BTW, I went with the LEDs you linked to above...... They never lasted more than a few weeks, so while they are cheap to replace, you'd be better off asking Jenn about the EcoPicos..... Six months down the road, they'll be cheaper than those bulbs in the link.

This is my Fluval Edge build thread.... Lots about the lighting I tried......

I'm very happy with the EcoPicos

you've got a real nice system there. I might just go for the LEDs. Jenn sells em you say? I'll have to head north soon.. oh darn

Call her, they are special order, but I'm extremely pleased with the pricing and the quick turn around time!

Seriously, your friend wont be disappointed!

BTW, the EcoPicos fit right into the lightbar of the Edge.... Zero modding required, just a few Zip Ties to hold them in place.....
