The display tank got a few new residents over the weekend.

And I now have a new favorite picture of the tank.

On a parting note, I've been using the saw a lot. Frag packs will be coming soon.

What a clever way to incorporate the garden eels into the reef! This build is sincerely shaping up to be one of my favorite tanks I've seen... There are few reefs like it and I envy your creativity. I'd love to see it in person some day.

How beautiful and fun! Thanks for sharing.

I see your Xenia adjacent to green star polyps. I’ve placed both in my aquarium, on isolated rocks in the sand. Does the Xenia grow faster?

I actually had unknown fish eating one area of a mass of Xenia during a recent vacation. The automatic feeder must’ve been an adequate? Has totally grown in the past 30 days.

Yeah the xenia definitely grows faster, but the GPS is holding it at bay. That rock is so overgrown at this point I have to prune the edges so the xenia doesnt just fall off and go exploring. What you see is probably 4-6 months of grown from a typical frag.

And yup, way back in the long long ago I had a blue tang that ate xenia. Ive also had all my xenia disappear after an ATO incident and my salinity dropped a few points.

I joined this forum just due to the garden eels as your tank was pointed out to me by another local ATL reefer. Three questions.

1). Where did you source the eels.
2). Did you quarantine?
3). Are you concerned about the bio build up (poop) from the eels being in a closed plastic container? I was thinking of copying your tactic, but was going to glue some bio tiles like Maxspect biobricks together in order to hold the sand.

1. Eels came from Nemos, He gets them a few times a year.
2. Yes I Qted them but only copper. I did not put them through prazi after hearing they dont do well in with that. Bring the copper up slowly, I did it over a week.
3. Nope, No concern at all. In all my reading I came across a post talking about them pooping. They actually come out of their hole to poop so there is no buildup in the sand from them. I dont see any bio load from them or the sand bed simply because I feed 8 times a day and the system is pretty big.

Here are a few other things you should know. I am down to 4 of the original 8, one did not want to eat and 3 escaped through the overflow teeth. Here is the big one. They did not stay in the can. 3 of them moved around the tank for about 5 months. I currently have 3 in the can, one is behind the rockwork somewhere and the others found their way back to the can after roaming around the tank. I guess they finally realized where the deep sand was.

When you QT them, do it WITH other fish as soon as they are eating. I did mine by themselves to get them to eat and then left them alone. They were fine when I came around but once they were in the tank the fish scared them for a good week before they started eating again(one never did). They get used to the fish fine after a few weeks but if I had gotten them used to fish while in QT I think my loses would have been much lower.

Getting them eating was oddly not that hard. For some reason mine wanted nothing to do with live brine but loved fish eggs, cyclops, rotifers and just about anything else small and frozen. It took me about 3 weeks to get them eating regular foods and not be scared of me.

Good luck!

Amazing. Thanks. I was thinking of buying them from here https://seahorsesavvy.com/collectio...quarium-conditioned-orange-striped-garden-eel

They raise seahorses which are finicky eaters and it states they are 'conditioned' and eating.

You have such an amazing setup. I was originally thinking of doing a lower version of what you had for a container, essentially making a larger/wider container of sand in the middle of the tank so that I didn't have to have a deep sand bed against the glass, but your tall version is a good inspiration.

I have not seen orange stripes available in a long time. Be aware, everything I have heard so far is that the orange stripes are harder to keep than the spotted ones. Price is a bit high but if they are already eating thats 80% of the battle.

Let me know if you end up getting them.
