Just wondering if anyone out there with an eshine 4g unit has removed the optics?

Anyone? I've opened up the unit but wasn't sure how to remove optics. I've read of some taking them off the 3g models. I assume its similar.

I believe they are simply pressure fitted on the optic. If in doubt, I'm sure someone at eShine would be happy to answer. They have online chat sessions at

Peter at eshines was helpful when I purchased my lights
I would chat with him on their website live

Thanks. I will try. What model are you running? I have never tested w a par meter but I felt like the lights at 100% (mine aren't dimmable) are just too strong. Do you have optics on yours?

I have 3 Of the 50x3. 3G and 1 of the 25x3 3G. All have 90 optics . I am only using 1 now on a 20 gallon frag tank and it works great but I use 7 hrs all blue and turn the wht on for 3 hrs during that time.
The 3G does not dim and they were very strong and the fried several corals when I started using them so I went back to T5 lights on a few of my tanks and I have couple tanks with member mod.dim able and 90 degree optics and seem to work well due to being able to dim them.
I did buy a dimmers for the 3G units and it will dim about 50% or full on or off but I just thought I would make life easy and go back to my T5 until I decide on new set up.

I have a 60x3 4g unit and aquawasher and 2 mm units over my 120. The corals show me that the eshine light is much stronger. I had zoas on the sand bed that were shrinking up and favia that was bleaching. I have since cut the entire blue portion on the eshine and just run the whites which is a mix of white blue and UV. I'm seeing happier coral on the sand bed and no I'll effect from the spa up high. I have no spotlighting effect but I think I'd do better to remove the optics and go get the blues running again.

Today I popped off all the optics. Much easier than I thought. I have the unit running at full blast again so I will see how everything does.

Now that I've seen the chip board I'd like to mod it with some green, red, warm white, and some of the various blue spectrum chips. I've never soldered anything before so I will have to research.

Yeah i removed mine the minute i got my units. its wayyyyy too much with the optics on and im getting great growth over the past few months

Not hard at all... I used to do LOTS of soldering when I worked at a video arcade years ago.... It's come into handy quite a few times over the years.

Do you have a 3G or 4G unit. I only have one problem with removing the optics on my 4G. The glass that covers the LEDs is actually painted black except for the round holes the size of the optic cover where each LED is. I guess eshine did this for the aesthetic appearance of the unit so that you can only see the LED light and not the inner workings of the chip board. So I am losing a lot of light because it can't all pass through the glass.
