My Cardiff tank (similar to Solana but with round front) has a crack in it. The tank has been sitting in my garage for the past month empty. I was looking at it Friday night thinking about where I would set it up in the new house. Saturday afternoon I go out to the garage and notice the crack. I know that nobody had been in the garage.

Is it possible that the crazy weather with the pressure changes caused it to crack? I could understand temperature swings causing a crack but not pressure.

Funny that you mention it but I had a piece of glass for a table sitting on my back deck, and it cracked sometime Saturday night/Sunday morning, and there has been no one on the deck. I figured it had something to do with temp/pressure...

Pressure would only cause a crack if it were completely sealed... and even then I doubt the atmospheric pressure change would come even close to the pressure that a full load of water exerts on it. We haven't had a temp swing of any magnitude lately either, even if that could do it. Does it sit near anything that vibrates hard, like a washing machine? The only thing I ever had spontaneously crack was a wine glass sitting on top of the fridge. The very slight vibration caused it apparently... I happened to be looking at it when it cracked, or I would never have believed it just did it all by itself.

your living in the "twilight zone" the older kids here know what i'm talking bout

That's odd. How long ago did you buy the tank? Just wondering if a warranty might cover this...

In years past I have installed curved glass which is usually laminated (not sure about the Cardiff) on circular stairs with no problems . Arrive the next day and one of the panels have a crack the full length. We then called the fabricator and was told that bent glass will sometimes release at some point between the layers and then causing stress in another area thereby cracking. So yes to your question but not on an aquarium.

more than likely it is a combination of temperature variations and vibration...

or your wife did it and denied being in the garage...

No dryer vents or even garage door opening and closing. We did get a lot of thunder but that should not have done anything. I bought it in Dec08 so I'll check and see if there may be a warranty item on this.

I just emailed my contact at Current for info.

I'll let you know what he says.

I just heard back from my contact at Current.

There is a 1-year warranty on the tank. He'd not heard of one spontaneously cracking but there's a first time for everything.

Contact the dealer who sold you the tank, and they should be able to assess that it was just one of those things (and not an impact fracture etc.) and get a replacement for you.

If you need any help etc., or your dealer is unable to help, just let me know and we'll get you sorted.

Cheers,
Jenn

thanks for your help Jenn. I'll take it in and see what they say. I guess the worst thing that happens is my wife gets a terrarium.
