I have been reading most of the day about this process of Killing Rock and Recurring it. Some places say only bleaching is necessary. Some say bleach plus acid is necessary. Etc, Etc.
I have been slowly removing rock out of my tank. About 1/4 has been removed so far. Mainly little pieces. The reason I am doing this is an Aiptasia outbreak. Since the beginning of the year. 100-200+ polyps. Also, tons of GSP. I still have plenty more.
But this is my plan:
All of the rock I have removed I have placed in a 5 gallon bucket of RODI water. I was in that bucket with a powerhead for about 10 days. After 10 days, everything was mush and GSP removed with no problem. I then hosed the rocks off with a strong fan tipped nozzle and then a shower pattern.
Now all of the rock is sitting in a 32 gallon brute container with a 1:10 bleach concoction. It has been their for 2 days. All is white. They are clean, clean.
My next course of action is:
to drain the bucket
rinse all the rocks very well, by hose and by dunking in RODI water.
soaking the rocks in RODI plus PRIME overnight
draining the bucket again
add tankwater from my next water change, with a heater and letting it sit as long as needed.
After that? I'm open to suggestions. Am I going to have a crazy phosphate leaching problem with this?
I am thinking of adding a piece of shrimp, plus start dosing with special blend. Or is this a waste of time?
All of this rock removed so far, I plan to add to my sump, while I start removing more pieces. I also have a giant bucket of lace rock to sort through that I want to use as shelf rock. Cleaned by by the same procedure.
Let me know if I am on the right track or completely in left field. I am going to do this as slow as possible. But I have only about 15 coral that I plan on keeping, the rest I'm gonna give/trade away.
