Fan broke on JBJ 12g nano. What light to upgrade to?

I am setting up my old JBJ 12g nano. The fan was corroded so I ordered two new ones but they did not work. The water has gotten above 85º without a fan!

I was thinking I'd return the fans and new PC bulbs and just get the K-2 Viper metal halide lamp with fan and 2 blue LEDs. Is 150watts/14,000k an appropriate amount for 12 gallons? Should I buy the glass top for the tank?

Anyone approve of this light or have better ideas?

I would talk with Jenn at Imagine Ocean about a LED strip. I have seen a tank they have that sits on the front counter very nice. They will even install for a great price also.

I think I'm going to go check out that tank, I've heard about it in other places.

I've read mixed reviews about LEDs. Will the Ecoxotic Panorama support anemone, clams or SPS? I mostly like softies and LPS but it would be cool to be able to have some of the high light stuff.

On my 12 gallon I have a 150 watt viper with phoenix 14k and I am 100% pleased with it. I built the mesh top that Acroholic made a "how to" thread on and it works amazing. My tank used to get up to 83-84 when I had P/Cs and I have no problem with overheating now with the halide and the mesh top.

I think you will need 2-3 of those to really support everything. You could be fine with a 70 watt MH on a 12 gallon tank.

Ummm...Somebody better tell Jenn's RBTA it's not supposed to be growing under 1 x 12 watt Panorama LED! :confused2:

FWIW- I would add 2 of the original or better yet, the new higher power model of the Panorama's (they are less $$). Maybe 1 x Red+blue and 1 x blue+white.

Yea anemone should be good under 1 or 2 but SPS and Clams? I doubt 1 could support either for an extended period of time.

I have no doubt that you could keep all of the above under 38 watts of LED in that tank (19 watts each). They are $89 each MAP pricing.

Edit:

No Ethan...

...these (they are 19 watts for $89)-

RBTA is out of that tank nowadays (after it split)... and Brian re-did that entire tank about 2 weeks ago - starting from scratch (he put all the zoas and stuff in the sell system).

I never tried SPS (due to wandering anemone) or a clam under that one Panorama so I can't say if it would be sufficient. I did have LPS in there that outgrew the tank.

I believe the Panoramas have been changed recently, the one I have is 12 watts.

The price of $89 dollars looks great, but you also have to take into account the cost of the power supply as well. The 12 watters include the power supply and are a plug and play.

Thanks everyone for the help.

Yes, $89 is not the final price for those Panoramas. And I'd need a couple.

I've been doing some more research today and here's what I'm thinking.

Option 1- buy a used 150w 14000K metal halide light. But I'm worried about the summer heat as I live in Georgia.

Option 2- What about these PAR30 LED bulbs? I could hang a fixture I already have and it's cheaper! Then I'd just add a couple of moonlights and done. I could upgrade to two in the future if need be. I've read good things about all they can support. Does anyone have any experience with PAR30 bulbs an anemones, SPS or clams?

The Par bulbs tend to spotlight. Just tossing this out there, just found it but rapid LED has a plug and play set up for 14G biocube, I bet it would fit in your nanocube since the heatsink is only 9 in long. Might be worth checking out.

I kind of like that spotlight look I've seen on other tanks with these bulbs.

I emailed Rapid LED for the dimensions needed on that retrofit. I'm assuming it comes with everything I need? I'd enjoy doing a DIY LED light fixture but I don't have any tools.

They have two, one that is dimmable that you would need to buy a controller to use or they have one that isn't dimmable that it 100% plug and play, no tools required other than a screwdriver.

I don't know much about LED's as I fall into the late majority/laggards in the product diffusion curve when it comes to technology. But I do know if you get the Viper with the built in fan you shouldn't have an issue with heat if you have an open top/mesh top. You just need to make sure you have an ATO or top off manually religiously. During the summer I was topping off about 25-30 ounces a day in my 12 gallon due to the fan blowing across the surface.

It was nice to meet you today, Ethan! :)

As discussed - here's a link to our Aquapod before and "then" pix (pix are older but were current when I published that.)

It was nice to meet you too! And by the way, my ears popped going down that mountain too, so don't hesitate to try diving someday!

I've decided to go with the Panorama instead of the bulb (due to evaporation) or the DIY kit cause it looks too complicated, and more expensive, to make it actually dimmable. Thanks everyone for you input.

Woot! Now this build finally feels like it's underway again after having mixed saltwater a few weeks ago haha.

I have a single panorama strip on my jbj 12 gallon that I got from Jenn. I screwed it to the lid using existing holes from the original lights. I swapped the original fans out for something bigger as the tank was getting too hot even with the LEDs. Works great and was easy.

I keep mushrooms, lps and just added monti to the tank. Everything is doing great. Let me know if you want to see pictures.

I ordered a panorama pro strip from Jenn as well. I pick it up and get my live rock Tuesday :yay: Then I'll start an official build thread for this tank.

I can never get enough photos of other tanks.
